Kanir's early life was typical for a hobgoblin. Drafted into military service as soon as he was old enough to swing a stick, he spent his early years studying the arts of war. Early on, however, he discovered he had a natural affinity for magic. Initially he attempted to suppress this "weakness" lest others see him as an aberration. As he grew older, though, he started to question this aspect of his culture. Why limit himself to martial training? Blending the martial with the arcane was surely the path to true combat supremacy. He attempted to discuss this idea with his superiors, but they dismissed it as childish nonsense and strongly suggested that he drop it.
Not satisfied with this response, Kanir began to secretly cultivate what he now saw as a gift. He noticed that some of the slaves shared his gift and convinced one of them to teach him a few cantrips. He practiced long and hard on these spells, always in secret, until he felt that he had mastered them.
One day, he decided the time had come to publicly demonstrate his theory. As usual, he reported to school and participated in his lessons. When the time came for sparring drills, he picked up his trusty quarterstaff and dueled with his partner the way that they had been taught. Suddenly, he raised one hand and unleashed a blast of ice, catching his opponent completely off guard. He followed up with a quick blow to the head with his staff and knocked the other out cold.
For a moment, there was stunned silence, and Kanir anticipated the praise that he so richly deserved. It was his turn to be shocked into silence when the instructor angrily shouted, "GET! OUT!!!". Suddenly he found himself running for his life as a mob of instructors and fellow students chased him from the school and didn't stop until they ran him clear out of the city.
Obviously, they weren't ready for his new fighting style yet. He swore that one day he would return, a living legend, and prove to them that his way truly was the best.
