Tomas, a relatively new mercenary, was greeted by the group and had their current job explained to him - that of defeating a guardian. Initially he was somewhat unnerved by their casual talk of murder, before it was made clear that the things they'd been murdering were oppressive bad guys, which clearly made it much better. Still a bit wary, Tomas gathered up some protective gear even so, becoming increasingly alarmed and regretful as to his choices as those selling him the items described the various dangers of the swamp. Even so he persisted, and eventually the group as a whole traveled to the swamp to meet up with the Grippli there and show Tomas who they were fighting for. The tribe leader, Garibb, was only too happy to meet another would-be ally, happily filling him in and describing the callous nature of the beings the sellswords had been facing thus far. Appeased, Tomas happily went along with everyone else to the last Guardian they'd need to deal with. Using the walkways once more it was easy enough to reach the area of the Hollow Trees. As per the name, there were a quartet of trees that were all hollow with some of the flammable mist or gas wafting from inside. After some careful inspection, from a healthy distance, it was surmised that the trees had once been multiple people each, twisted and shaped to create some form of macabre trunk.
As the rest of the group went to scout ahead, Tomas hung back for safety, only to be picked out by their foe as clearly the weakest and most isolated - being at the back. Two stinging grazes appeared on his neck and arm alongside a high pitched buzzing noise and it wasn't long before several of the party noticed their adversary was absolutely tiny. It appeared to be some form of pixie with forearms that looked like bone spikes, though this view was quickly ended as the creature finally hit it's mark and slammed into Tomas' stomach, boring inside. Fenix helpfully offered to immolate Tomas, who declined, and the rest of the party considered their options quickly as they variously helped Tomas withstand the internal damage via their healing magics. Choompa, thinking quickly, shoved his hand inside and grabbed what he could feel. Several encouraged him to rip it out, but Tomas emphatically didn't wish for that and Choompa himself was unsure he even held the enemy as it just felt kind of squishy. It was then that the fey erupted with several bone-like spurs, ripping out of Tomas and contributing to his rather bad day.
Letting go, Choompa ripped his hand back out to avoid getting hit. Taicho, fairly sure he now had a plan, wrapped the sinew garrote he'd gained from a previous Guardian, let the teeth in it gain purchase, and ripped the mass of bone spike out of Tomas via an entirely newly made hole. Tomas didn't appreciate this, but the fey was now out. It was a relatively simple matter for Taicho to maintain his stranglehold on the terrified little critter and, as it was progressively throttled and chewed to death, several others helpfully hit it several times. Once it had stopped struggling, and once Tomas was healed and amazed he was still alive, the group inspected the remained. They were utterly wrecked, but enough tiny body parts remained for it to at least be vaguely identifiable, so the group returned to the Grippli with their proof. Much jubilation and payment was had all round with Garibb explaining that now his people had a wide window through which they could travel without having to worry about the Guardians and their practices. It looked like the Grippli could finally make it safely out of the swamp.
