Ganderlay Silver, leader of the Grey Guard, was in a bind. His regulars were all out on assignment and something came up too close to home to ignore. A farmer from the farmstead district of Rook had come to him with a story of woe. His little girl it seems was taken by someone or something and was dragged into the forest. Without his regulars Ganderlay was forced to make use of what adventures were at hand.
Searching around the farmstead the party found tracks, goblin tracks. They followed them until they they found a pair of goblins playing tug-o-war with a stuffed doll while another watched and heckled. They massacred the wretch beasts only to have one hiding in a tree rain arrows down upon them. Unfortunately for the poor beast magic missiles aim true. Picking up the trail the group continued until they found a small goblin encampment. Their approach was cautious, and the sighting of a small humanoid lying on the floor guaranteed the coming battle.
While the battle raged an hulking, malformed, goblin charged in, scooped up the unconscious form, and darted away to the east. Once the encampment was cleared the would be heroes gave chase.
Unable to lose his foes the large goblin, along with the two peons it had called to its side, stopped to face their chasers. In frustration the brute slammed the little girl into the ground and charged. The battle was close, with two of the heroes brought to the brink of death and one more heavily injured, but in the end they prevailed. They approached the crumpled form and found the young girl to be alive... just barely.
Unable to treat the girls grievous wounds, she perished...
Feeling terrible and trying to gain some value from this excursion the adventurers beheaded the odd goblin and brought it back to Ganderlay. The girls corpse they brought back to the farmer.
Ganderlay examined the head with a look of growing concern. "No, it can't be." He muttered forlornly. He then told the party the history of the Mistvale mines. He told of a mist that seeps from low in the mines every few decades. He told how there are many tales of horror about the mist but that it is hard to tell truth from fiction as the tales vary so. "One thing is constant among all the tales however," he begins ominously, "they all tell of coming horrors".
