Here's my argument for Kensai's chosen weapon being able to be used with Simple weapons as well:
www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/fighter/archetypes/paizo---fighter-archetypes/weapon-master
Both do not explicitly state limitations or possibilities with what weapons can be chosen as a 'chosen weapon', especially since there's no tab for Chosen Weapon (Ex) telling you to do so. Both Weapon Master and Kensai work fairly similar, using a single type of weapon to great lengths and capability.
My argument is that neither of them tell you limitations on which weapons you can pick, but we have an example that shows the WP Fighter can pick any weapon, and doesn't automatically gain proficiency in it if it's exotic. I'd like to say that Kensai probably works the same way, except he gains a single proficiency in either martial or exotic so he may use his chosen weapon immediately, if he didn't already have proficiency. I'd like to elect that the Kensai's way of choosing a 'chosen weapon' functions like the weapon master, except as per the Duelist class ability, is limited to melee weapons, and if not, then ruling that the WP Fighter is restricted to martial or exotic weapons, so that continuity is maintained. They are basically the same archetype for two different classes, but we treat them differently because bad writing.
My character isn't a Kensai, but that's mostly because poor RAW, so I found alternatives for my character to fit my personal narrative and artistic/mechanical style. Even if you guys ruled simple weapon kensai as legal, I wouldn't be changing my character at this point because I am happy with what I have now.

So earlier I argued on this subject in the discord. The Kensai's wording being so vague I suggested we make it similar to the Weapon Master Fighter, where the WM Fighter could pick any weapon (Except for the Kensai, restricted to melee only), even simple weapons if they wanted to (even though it was statistically disadvantageous). The argument was very obtuse and we went around in circles for a while. I was suggested to post it here, and I also posted it on the Paizo Website, hoping to get an official ruling or for it to get FAQ'd.
I would like to ask if we could rule that Kensai could use simple weapons (And unarmed if you've got the improved unarmed strike feat) as their chosen weapon if desired (As it would make more sense), even though it'd be a disadvantage compared to the others. With future characters, I'd be willing to give up the Martial/Exotic proficiency without expectations for anything in return if players were allowed to pick a simple weapon.
