Luis, a commander of the Nyhavn military, was approach by 2 guards and informed that the outer wards had sustained a small amount of damage which could imply an unwanted incursion. After following them to the spot and admitting he had no aptitude or capability to detect magic, Luis sent the pair to canvas the local temple and libraries for specialists who could. He himself went to search also, finding Lin and Zakryk. Reassembling at the breach, the guards returned with Denshi and Palaiya before leaving for their patrol. The magical specialists were able to inspect the damage and Zakryk positied that it had been carefully caused with some form of magical blade. Denshi, checking the other side, found that there was the faintest of auras which Zakryk was able to identify as abduration. The group was able to variously identify some tracks, though Luis sent for some more guards to provide assistance with tracking. Denshi meanwhile popped back to down for some scrolls to take advantage of having a good nose. The scouts who accompanied Luis back were able to identify the tracks as ratfolk and combined with Denshi's superior scent, it was determined that the instigator had likely teleported in a short distance outside the wards. Tracking back through the ward, Denshi smelled blood and with a bit of digging discovered a corpse. As he said to leave the scene as intact as possible, Lin excavated everything with her earthen affinity, wrecking most of the evidence. The body was revealed though as a guard missing his armour and most clothing.
Luis, who had been ordering the soldiers accompanying him to follow him to the nearest ratfolk settlements, then went to order the guards to carry the body back. Denshi advised that doing this openly would be playing their hand too early, so Luis ordered the men to get a bodybag. Denshi again interjected that a bodybag was still obvious, but Luis insisted on his order and the soldiers left. Regardless, Luis was convinced by the group to go with them to check in with one of the local patrol houses to find out who the corpse was, check if there were any irregularities and so on since Luis had been unable to find the two guards from earlier. They arrived to find a clerk who was clearly nervous. When pressed, the man revealed that two guards from last night's patrol hadn't checked back in and were missing. One matched the description of the corpse. The two guards who had spoken to Luis at the beginning were now immediately suspect. The clerk was sent to liase with the guards ordered to get the bodybag, only to rush back in panic. Those poor men and women were all dead, callously slashed apart. Denshi, Zakryk and Lin all quickly rushed off for more scrolls to help in tracking said guards down, whilst Palaiya and Luis went towards the barracks house itself. As Palaiya stepped in he was almost immediately killed by a mass of claws, prompting Luis to grab him, pull him to safety then wait after ordering the clerk to get more guards like the ones who had clearly already been butchered by the assailant.
Denshi and the others, tracking the armour the imposters had been wearing, came across one of the pair in a patrol house, casually making notes of the patrols and generally being left alone by the other guards. When questioned by Denshi, the man smiled and deftly teleported away, prompting the trio to rush as fast as they could back to the barracks after tracing the teleport. They arrived just in time to hear another teleport going off in the barracks. After finding it now empty aside from a bunch of guard corpses, Denshi spent some time questioning Luis as to why he'd not acted as a Commander of the guard and instead called for backup that not only was weaker than him, but clearly out of their depth considering the bodies. Luis explained that he was too important to die, and now had reports to write, leaving the rest of the group suitably impressed at the scope of Luis' paperwork.
