Assembling together, Jared, Talon and Fenix headed back into the Murkale swamps to meet up with Garibb once more. It had been a while since they'd faced the Guardians and after having mentioned clearing out more of them last time, it seemed as good a time as tiny to clear another. It was swift work to meet the grippli again and, after chatting to the chieftain, they found that indeed some Grippli had gone missing to the north east. A few missives from other tribes in that direction had revealed that passage through was difficult and more often than not the messengers or traveling parties were lost to the swamp. With a Guardian being around that region, named as the Guardian of the Singing Bone, it seemed all too likely that this was their work. Already fairly prepared, the group headed up into the canopy walkways and made their way north east. After no more than a few hours, Talon and Choompa noticed that not only was the area much quieter than expected, but that there was almost a form of un-sound pulsating through the swamp. A resonance of silence that seemed to quieten the surroundings in the staccato rhythm of a rapid heartbeat. As it seemed to be coming from the west, the group went to take the next tributary walkway in that direction. As Jared went to step onto it however, he felt something brush against his chest and face. Choompa hissed a warning - they were webs, almost imperceptible. He moved to quickly cut them but Jared's movement already made it too late. Moments later a pair of giant spiders emerged and, though their fangs were felt by Jared, Fenix and Choompa's snake, they stood no chance against the massed slaughter of the mercenaries.
With the spiders defeated, the group set off down the walkway properly, Choompa scouting slightly ahead to cut the web strands as he saw them. Jared noticed a slight curiosity though - the further they went down the walkway, the less wear and tear there seemed to be on it. Some of the vines making the bridge were even oozing sap, something deeply unusual. Thinking that the silence was somewhat absolute the further on they went, every went to try and push themselves past whatever illusory effect was causing it after talon sensed illusion was once again surrounding them. Though nearly everyone did fine and could hear the quiet swamp again, Jared sat and meditated to clear his mind. For his reward his eardrums burst - his will was not as strong. Seeing their friend's distress, the group waiting for him to lead on since he was already deaf anyway. It wasn't long before they found that the walkway simply ended, as if cleanly sliced. Whilst Choompa went to set a rope down, Talon noticed that the bridge really did just end - nothing supported the end of it, it just appeared to levitate. Upon mentioning this, Choompa pulled at one of the ropes that was floating there, feeling some resistance. So, he yanked. The bridge fell as whatever support was severed and everyone landed in an undignified heap aside from Fenix, who calmly floated down. After dusting themselves off those who could hear noted that soft singing was coming not far away from the west still, no doubt a source of the troubling issues.
As they entered a clearing, they saw and in most cases heard a radiant porcelain-like beauty, fey in appearance and posture. Her song was too much for Talon and Fenix however as the resonance detonated their eyeballs. This wasn't conducive to seeing. As the Guardian of Singing Bone turned, her gestures conjured a shimmering gossamer and spiderweb tiger into existence. With a growl it pounced, utterly killing Choompa and mulching him with it's bulk as every strike found it's mark. Though the rest of the group did what they could, it lunged forward and swiftly demolished Jared who also fell to death under it's unerring and no doubt impressively lucky strikes. Fenix shot forth arcs of electricity which burst it apart, only to also catch Choompa's snake and electrocuting it unconscious. As the Guardian closed in to deliver the final stabs to the serpent, Talon and Fenix ran blindly into the swamp, evading what they knew was almost certain death.
Hours later, both had managed, through trial, error and occasionally falling over and running into trees, to find their way back up to the canopy walkways. Making their respective ways back to the Grippli settlement saw the shamans and physicians able to restore their eyes and sight, and commiserations were given for their loss. Elsewhere, Jared awoke several days later, noticing his body was loamy and soft, looking closer in appearance to the swamp around him rather than normal flesh. Choompa too awake, his limbs badly set and misshapen, patches of his skin showing the scales of his pet snake yet the snake itself was nowhere to be found. Both Jared and Choompa had seemingly been saved, though by what and in what manner they did not know...
