Jared and Fenix, traveling to a local enclave in Salisara, came across Kosnica. After introductions and banding together for mutual safety, the trio headed towards their destination only to find the enclave raided and somewhat on fire. Noticing several dead bodies of denizens and a single Derro corpse, the group went to investigate the only source of noise. One tent near the middle had anguished whining and mewling and, when investigated, revealed a stitched together amalgamation of horror, multiple limbs flailing in agony and pain. It was swiftly set on fire and hacked apart, though it landed several telling blows on Kosnica and Jared. Concerned that at least half the villagers were missing, the trio searched and found a trail of blood, non-Derro blood, leading down one of the tunnels branching off from the cavern. They elected to follow it even without an employer due to the risk the Derro posed, as well as potential rewards from any other enclaves nearby spared danger from their actions. It wasn't long before they found a section of the tunnel that had been rapidly excavated with some kind of blasting charges. Ropes helped Jared and Kos across, though Fenix opted to climb down. The knotted rope provided no real assistance as he fell to the depths. It turned out those depths were a cunning tarp, as the fall was twice as far as he thought, though a swift featherfall saved his legs from injury. Jared was able to climb down and tie him into a harness, helping Kos to pull him out once he reach the top once again.
Several minutes later the blood trail led to a corpse left in an ungainly manner in the corridor. Kos was able to identify that some kind of wire was attached, leading off down the tunnel. After tracking it he saw that it was linked to multiple keystones ahead, which is removed could cause a tunnel collapse. With a steady hand he was able to cut half the wires and provide enough room for the group to forge on ahead. The next issue was a pair of corpses stacked across the tunnel, obscuring a lot of the floor. Though Kos couldn't see anything untoward at a distance, Jared warned him that the ceiling looked like it had been tampered with. Kos, taking his cue, went up to disarm whatever trap was there and instead inadvertently triggered it. A pressure plate linked to the ceiling caused several rocks to fall, revealing another monstrosity - multiple people stiched together and warped to resemble some form of multi-limbed insect, their flesh and skin stretch to appear like carapace. It attacked in mute rage and horror, metal plates over it's mouths and vocal chords removed. Jared held it back as Fenix rained magic upon it, though it's fury eventually brought Jared down. Seeing his ally in danger, Kosnica rushed forwards only to be utterly bludgeoned into the floor, killing him. As the thing's chest split over to reveal a missing sternum and ribs sharpened into teeth whilst it utterly ruined Kosnica's body by 'chewing', Fenix rushed forwards and finally ended with with great arcs of electricity, rescuing Jared as it collapsed to the ground.
Not wanting to travel on their own, the duo took Kos' body back down the corridor and along a different path to another enclave to get him back to the land of the living. All the people in the second settlement seemed fairly emaciated, though the two mortuary attendants were somewhat corpulent. In exchange for food the pair were happy to bring back Kos, though as he sat up his frame was clearly malnourished and hunger spread through him. A ration did nothing to ease it, and at his insistence the trio set off to find food, rather than continue persecuting their prior task. It wasn't long before they surfaced from Salisara and rushed towards a settlement, Kos utterly ravenous. As they reached an inn Kosnica practically threw 100 gold at the innkeeper and demanded all the food he could get. With the innkeeper happy to comply, Kosnica gorged himself, regurgitated chunks of it and then reconsumed it as the patrons of the inn placed bets. Jared and Fenix watched on, knowing that the method their ally had been brought back with was likely.... flawed.
