Sirru, exploring Salisara after the comparatively recent acquisition of his mine, came across a small enclave in which taicho and Milene were conversing with an apothecary about some disappearances. The two welcomed the newcomer, introducing themselves and deciding to tackle to problem together for increased safety. After inspecting one of the victims, the apothecary suggested also including Seshat, who had come across the settlement barely a day ago. With their various expertise, none of them could readily identify what had caused the puncture marks on the victim, though were told that similar marks had appeared on all the previous ones who had been found. At their best guess, it was maybe some type of aberration. After asking where most of the disappearances had happened, the quartet set off. It wasn't long after they started traversing the irregular and oft narrow clefts and corridors underground that they came across a small chasm barring their way. Thankfully Milene was prepared and scrambled across the walls, trailing a rope over and tying it securely. Sirru simply floated down, across then back up without much concern, though Seshat was gratefully helped across the guide rope by Taicho. Continuing on, the group found the darkness largely uneventful, though eventually they did come across a small cavern complete with the usual stalactites and stalagmites. As is often the case, a couple of these happened to be darkmantles, though precision fire from Milene swiftly took one down before it could even react. The second proved more troublesome, ripping into Taicho and Sirru before it too was brought down. A quick recovery later than the intrepid group set off once more.
For the most part much of the tunnels they encountered were uninhabited, though a much larger cavern they came across housed a pool of black ichorous water that, when agitated, turned out to be alive. It consumed the summoned horse that had been used to test it, only to be quickly outpaced by the much faster party who wanted nothing to do with anything that could melt through metal and flesh so fast. Leaving it far behind, they continued for hours till they found a larger space which led to a fork in the path. One was caved in, and the other was slightly off course. Milene, who was by now definitely not Milene and instead the masked heroine Princess Bees, sought to shovel out the cave in. Everyone else kept a safe distance as she dislodged more and more structurally important rocks, quickly causing the cavern roof to cave in on her and nearly crushing her alive. The rest of the group were able to excavate her, healing her up and noticing in the process that the other side of the cave in had another buried corpse. Since it also showed the puncture marks, it was deemed the correct way to go. Though it took even more wandering along in dark tunnels, the group eventually found the remnants of another enclave, this one sacked and full of corpses. Each one bore the puncture marks somewhere, though the putrefaction of the corpses suggested the attack took place some time ago.
Seshat was concerned that one corpse had been broken open, the sternum and heart removed almost ritualistically, which didn't seem in keeping with the marks. As the group pondered this and kept an eye out for enemies, one struck. Taicho was suddenly throttled and lifted into the air, through his struggles saw it lose purchase around his neck. It tried to hoist another victim but the combined efforts against it quickly sent it unconscious. Prone and defenceless, Taicho used a garrote to strangle it's head clean off, the fey sinew teeth chewing the neck to pieces. Inspecting the hand, it was found that the barbs along each elongated finger matched the puncture wounds they had seen on each body, though it was a tad puzzling why each corpse only had a single line of marks and in differing places. Regardless a hand was lopped off and, along with the head, was returned to the Apothecary to explain what had caused the issues. Seshat made sure to mention that the creature, a choker as it was usually called, could live in small groups and killing just one wouldn't necessarily mean the end of the issue. Even so they were paid for their efforts and took their leave, though Seshat remained concerned as to why one victim was missing a heart...
