As each person who knows how to craft spells joined in, the room was suffused with a pale golden light. Runes flowed freely from each of the casters, swirling around the Fragment that was hovering in midair about three feet off the ground. The magic of the spell built and built, eager to be put to a specific purpose but kept in check by the casters. Lines of light began to course through the Fragment, though nothing seemed to happen as they did. The spell reached its crescendo, at one point magical energy fully engulfing the Fragment, but nothing appeared to happen at all. Varian reached the end of the notes, carefully observing the interactions between the spell and object as the energy died back down. And... nothing.
"Well, it doesn't have any particularly protective qualities.." he said, flipping to the next page. And on it went..
In most cases the Pseudospells worked as though there was no object at all. Whether it was the angry red light of an Evocation spell or the dull emerald of an Enchantment, the energies built and dissipated without anything noticeable happening at all. Varian was just about out of ideas to pursue on this front, but he was saving one of his most hopeful formulas for last. As they finished a Divination Pseudospell, he raised the papers to the rest of the group, indicating one of the spells they had already cast. "If you make a few adjustments here.. and here.." he said, pointing at two of the phrases, "..it will modify the general structure into a Teleportation effect. I would have started out with this, but I was also wondering if the Fragments would react to any other type of spell," he said.
Once more they began to chant, this time a calm azure light building. Varian felt, and he figured the others could as well, an immediate shift in the air. The moment the sigils began to appear they immediately flowed toward the Fragment, swirling around it like a shell. The Fragment disappeared from the space it was in, reappearing first ten feet in the air, then over on top of Robert's head, then directly on the ground. The Fragments that others may have brought also soak in the spell's energy, either serenely floating out of its wielder's pocket or, if that fails, teleporting directly. At one point a circle is formed and the runes pass between all of the Fragments, effortlessly creating a portal to Rook before flickering to reveal Cloud City, then Dis. Unsure of what else might happen, Varian spoke a few words of discordance, shattering the harmony of the casting.
The magic appeared for several seconds as though it would simply continue on without them. The blue glow continued to build until, like a petulant child realizing that it wouldn't receive the attention it needed to rampage, the energy dissipated in fitful sparks. All of the Fragments swirled about one another for another minute before they all settled slowly to the ground, still glowing as they always had. "Well.. that was a bit more than I was expecting.."

Miere pondered his fragment as the blue glow dissipated. That they hadn't reacted to the other schools of magic at all was a slight disappointment, and called into question the worth of trying a similar endeavour with multiple schools. "Varian," Miere started, "it does make sense that teleportation energy specifically had an effect, if only because the entity who gave them to us is split across multiple planarverses and slices of existence. I wonder...." He mused for a few moments, before looking up at the scholar.
"I would have suggested the next logical step as combining teleportation magic with various other schools as a matter of course to narrow any effect down." With a slight sigh as he sat back, Miere continued. "At this point however, due to the complete lack of resonance with any other magic, it seems like our efforts may be best expended analysing and experimenting with different strengths of teleportation." He gestured to the neat circle of fragments on the floor, still glowing. "Their formation and observed gateways potentially suggest that as a whole, their purpose may be to let us travel specifically to the other instances which may contain an aspect of the one who generated them, especially since our usual magical aptitude doesn't currently allow us to do that."
Turning to Lemon and Char, Miere frowned slightly. "Lemon, Char. I wasn't able to get the clearest look at the locations we could see through the gateway, aside from the obvious similarities. It's important then to ask the two of you. Did you notice any pertinent differences between the scenes we could see and the actuality of what is there? If my guess is correct the portals did indeed lead to those locations, but different instances of them." Miere steepled his hands and angled them towards the group as a whole.
"If that then happens to be the case, this can be significantly more dangerous than it may appear. Getting stuck in such another instance individually, without these fragments, essentially renders us trapped. In a fully functioning world with a great deal of similarities for most of them no doubt, but still a world different to our own in a myriad of potential ways." With a slightly grim smile Miere turned to Robert. "I take it this expands the possibilities somewhat Robert. Do you have any insight on this?"
"Of course," Miere said quietly to himself more than anyone else, "I could be entirely misled about all this."

Smiling as Alby asks her the question she shrugs and responds, "Don't worry Alby, the entire ordeal today is to ensure that our time in the Aetherlands will be enjoyable and fun." Her voice almost singingly, flying back over to her own position as they continued the ordeal.
Hurumphing as she produces a look of distaste when Varian messes up the magical flow, Lemon sighs after the entire magical ordeal settles. Providing eye contact to both Varian and Miere respectively she puffs up her cheeks as she folds her arms,
"Varian, I see everyone else has a fun orb and borb fragment, I want one." She shakes her head as she felt left out from what seemed to be an aetherlandic expedition that she was left out of. Folding her legs in the air as if she was sitting upon the air floating downward in order to maintain eye level with the rest of the party.
Looking around and nodding her head to Miere as he asks, "I know that every single location that was shown was somewhere that at-least one of us have been to, thus being recognizable to at least one of us, though you might be on to something along the lines of an augmented realty it would take quite an ordeal amount of effort in order to go to an augmented reality. It seems the pattern currently is that at-least one of us had to have visited it at least once but the effort required to adjust where we wish to go and an alternate place that would be something like Rook but not really could be achieved. Though I don't really wish to go to someplace like that. I do like the place we live after all."
Shrugging as she looks once more to Varian as she waits patiently for her own fragment.

Varian raised an eyebrow at the statement, but he shrugged and glided on over. "I can only imagine that a being such as The One would provide a way for others to gain access to whatever this may be," he said, holding out the Fragment. "Well, a method besides going into the book. Anyway, I think something may happen if you hold it," he said.
As Lemon reaches out and takes the Fragment, there is a small flash of blue light and a second Fragment appears in her hand. "Well, that was simple enough," he said as he turned around to head back to his position. "So, it's certainly possible that if the Fragment could augment something as simple as a spell framework to create portals, it could be used to access alternate dimensions. And as you said Miere, that could be quite deadly. I definitely think that we need to focus and better define any additional Teleportation spells we craft to avoid that possibility, assuming we can."

"Hmm. I must admit, I think pretty much all of us have been to Rook, Cloud City and Dis multiple times, or at least I have. I suppose we would have seen more locations had the sequence gone on." Miere said, glancing at Varian. "Still safety first. It seems then according to your evaluation Lemon that inadvertently opening a gateway to somewhere we don't want to go, or an alternate version of somewhere we do want, is unlikely unless we pump a truly significant amount of power in." Miere clapped his hands together with a smile. "That's good then. As you mention though Varian, with just a pseudospell a full blown gateway was achieved."
He gestured to the mostly intact circle of fragments. "You mention other teleportations spells we craft, but I wonder about testing the various spells of plane shift, teleport itself and possibly gate before fully creating our own conglomeration. I use all of those remarkably regularly and my work necessitates the use of gate and various gateways quite regularly. After all..." Miere indicated the demiplane around them with another smile. He stood suddenly, gesticulating off to the side and muttering under his breath as a large pillar organically formed from the ground, almost melting upwards as it attached to the ceiling. Chains formed looped around it, burning into existence link by link until several sets of full body harnesses formed.
Miere turned to look at the group. "Just in case, for those of you so unprotected, this should serve as a good anchor point. I know that with most gateways what is on one side has no tangible effect on the other." Miere regarded the fragments once more with a thoughtful expression settling on his face. "However, considering base energy was enough to create a full portal, it would be remiss to try stronger spells without at least considering the possibility that magic of sufficient strength could lead to complications. I, for one, would not like to open a portal and be suddenly dragged through by a force from the other side, whether an inherent aspect of the other side or something aggressive."
With a sudden grin Miere looked at Varian. "After all should there be a threat, based on that demonstration, even severing the energy provided to these little orbs doesn't necessarily end the process immediately. It seems a reasonable extrapolation that stronger energies would lead to a greater prolonged effect also."

"Hmm..." Char just watched as everyone input their own areas of magical knowledge, a variety of schools, arcane and divine. Suddenly something happened, flashes of Rook, Dis, and his home Cloud City. Varian stopped the casting before there could be a further reaction, Char felt a pang of disappointment. "I didn't notice anything in particular, hold up I wanna try something." Char channeled madness into his left flaming tendril, there was always residual madness as Char was a relaxed individual and he knew he wouldn't do any lasting harm to anyone. However they were trying to get information to help bring down the Dark Tapestry and you gotta think like the enemy, Char thought like them, he was even friends with some after setting up an academy for wayward Neothelids. Char went to imbue the fragments with his eldritch madness. 9wmfyWQq + 37 = Spellcraft

Despite Char's attempts to turn the artifact mad or make their spells more chaotic, attempting the Pseudospell a second time did not affect its results. As people get ready and they attempt some higher-level magic, the results are unfortunately underwhelming. Channeling a Gate spell does indeed cause the Fragments to circle about the portal, but it appears in Lemon's bathroom just as predicted. Varian frowns for a moment, then snaps his fingers. "Well, the entity did say that the spell had to be cast in the Aetherlands, and we do have increased power from our connection to it. It's possible that the seed allows greater strength than usual in Teleportation magic and we've simply reached the limit of what it can do in our reality. I'm also wary of how these things might interact with leylines and other magical forces in the other planes," he said, thinking aloud.
"It's quite possible that we'll need the additional strength afforded by the Aetherlands to truly unlock this thing's potential."

Robert perks up at the mention of the aetherlands "If we could possibly make about a minute stop at my plane in the Aetherland, I have found some interesting things in my book, I'd love to conduct a ritual to see if I can eke out the verbal components from the mysteries of the universe" Taking a swig from a thermos Robert smiles widely and thinks to himself, the ritual is probably unnecessary, but the secret is convincing the universe it works as expected. "I would like to show you all the auspicious things hidden inside the dreams of artists, the secrets the universe reveals in the whispering lore of stories."
Then Robert turns and looks seriously at Mierre, a flash of blue light flashes in his eyes as he adopts a thoughftul expression "Since the last time I have checked the chance of our existence being annihalated within the next 10 years has decreased by around 7%, that time was this morning, however as we struggle and make this more and more difficult for the opposition the tortures and horrors inflicted on us when and if we lose seem to be becoming progressively more" he pauses and thinks "Let's say imaginative". "Those bad ends compromise a little over three quarters of all current branching realities within my field of vision, however this is only if we make the wrong choices at a certain branch which is significantly more unlikely given our particular brand of skills and insights, volume does not mean likelihood in this case I would say".
Robert looks distantly at his pile of books "You see Mierre the truth of the matter is, I think the universe wants us to win at the end of the day, I would not go as far as to say it is predestined but I think you will find that once you have seen and read as much as me there is a certain pattern to the way thing unfold." Robert looks wistfully at the cover on of his book lovingly brushing it's leather cover "It won't be easy, nothing ever is, but the only way we lose is if we give up, pure pigheaded stubborness is the most powerful force in the universe after all" He smiles warmly in a way that reaches his eyes after saying this "Stagnation and indolence, these our the greatest enemies of existence, the great horrors that lie beyond the stars will lose, because they must, because the fact is that us, sentient life, are the universe discovering itself, knowing itself, admiring it's beauty, our will shapes it and vice versa, and neither of us want to end, not really, not as a whole." with a pensive looks Robert remarks "It is only once we have grown as far as we can, when their are no more mountains to brook, no more river to ford, that we give up, when we fall, when the slate is wipe cleaned and a new cycle begins, I think Nyhaven and the work we are doing proves it is not that time yet."

Miere did his best to mask his polite horror at Char's suggestions. Whilst he did like the man, he didn't quite agree with most of his methodology. Regardless he aided in the ritualistic procedures as Varian led them, visibly looking relieved when nothing went horribly wrong. Though the experimentation with higher forms of teleportation resulted in no progress, Miere gave a satisfied smile as a logical process was followed.
As Varian explained, Miere nodded once more. "Certainly. Easily enough accomplished." He stood and nodded to the side to indicate the gateway that suddenly blazed into existence without any prompting or muttering from Miere. "There, we can access the Aetherlands through there. I can maintain it for approximately two minutes, so we should step through relatively soon." Robert explaining his viewpoint to the room caused Miere to smile.
"That is a noble outlook, and certainly an optimistic one considering your words earlier. If you're quick enough I dare say you'll be able to still use this gateway." he said, taking several steps afterwards to move through to the other side. "This way if you please, everyone."

Gazing at her own fragment she shrugs as the portal to doorway to the aetherlands opens up. Looking around she chuckles when Char attempts to channel madness into his own fragment, it's a disappointment that nothing happened even though the results might have been cataclysmic it would have at least provided some sway in the happenings of the fragments. Though also sighing in relief when nothing happened Lemon's gentle smile still hovers over her face. Tilting her head ever so slightly she perks her hand up with the fragment now chained up similar to a necklace wrapped around it, gazing it from various angles. Continuing to look at it she merely contemplates various approaches to the ordeal, currently pretending to be one of the smartest individuals in the planarverse she chuckles to the thought of it. Looking around she nods her head once more, as she floats into an upright position looking around at the group,
"Though that might have been interesting dear Char, maybe we should hold off attempting to make a domain of madness or some sort of chaotic event while the rest of everyone is here, and also so near to a populace," as she indicates towards the doorway that leads to Nyhavn, "I guess we'll see what we can do in the Aetherlands."
Giving a light chuckle as she opens her fan once more to cover her mouth she gently floats over to the doorway nodding at Miere thanking him for keeping the door open, "Thank you Miere," as she floats into the Aetherlands.
