Assembling in the tavern 'The Final Recourse', situated above Salisara near one of the main mine entrances, the group discussed the rumours that a new group had moved into Salisara. Whether fleeing persecution or simply wanting independence was unclear, as was who the group actually were. Regardless such an opportunity promised good work that didn't necessarily mean fighting anything. This was seen as a plus. Mike, wishing to be proactive, went and hired the services of a good lawyer for a day in case they needed any official documents for trade agreements or anything similar. Once again Taicho had a pretty good idea of where to go and after the group had asked around, they headed down to meet the newcomers. The trip down was largely uneventful. Mike had hired a middle aged mercenary called Davos, who spotted some weak parts on the floor as they traveled, mirrored by Taicho who similarly noticed the floor and some weak stalactites above it. Using his lance he carefully struck them down and safely caused the ground to break away and form a rubble pile that could be climbed down to a lower level. As they continued and got closer they began to overhear gruff voices and the sounds of variously pickaxes and mining.
Recognising the language as goblin, which seemed slightly out of places for the deeper voices, the group made their way past the entrance to introduce themselves and found that the newcomers were in fact goblins, albeit much larger and bulkier. Almost the size as the group, these bulkier goblins seemed much stronger and more sure of themselves than some of the smaller breed the group had met before. They had already excavated a pretty big space and were mining through a wall to open up into another cavern. It also seemed like they were digging deeper, fully intending to make the place a grand home fit for them all. Asking about work, the group found that the goblins were more than happy to trade away the ore they were mining, along with any valuables in it, for what was essentially good press. As they explained, rumours could be good or bad and having people come looking for trouble, or to potentially 'sort out' possible enemies would be a massive pain. It seemed more than reasonable a request, so the group agreed. Mike proposed potentially opening a tavern there to help get people to turn up on good terms, explaining that he could import in good food and drink as he had bartending experience. This was met with a hearty amount of approval, since the goblins were more than happy to get more food and drink. Mike, as a gesture of good will, handed the goblin in charge a bottle of 100% proof alcohol. The party took a crate of ores and geodes as payment and made their way back to the surface and the tavern that had first gathered at that morning.
Speaking with the bartender, it was found that goblins were generally seen as bad - they tended to eat people. Arguing that technically anyone could eat people and it didn't happen all the time, Mike got the barkeep to agree to spread good rumours of the new goblin enclave. This was greatly assisted with a geode bribe. More negotiation and agreeing to give the barkeep a cut of the profits sourced Mike a supply of alcohol. Whilst this was going on, Fenix and Jared went to ask one of the local blacksmiths if they had any mining equipment. Since this was effectively a mining town the answer was a slightly bemused 'yes' as the man pointed out that they were surrounded with mining tools. Slightly sheepish, Fenix took his leave and the pair regrouped to inform the rest of the party that more equipment really wouldn't be a problem. The next consideration was an adequate food supply and potential trade agreements. The lawyer on retainer agreed that such documents could be made, but specific details were needed. After receiving some recommendations for local farms the group headed out and went to speak to a local farmer. As it turned out there was certainly sufficient grain for a regular supply if need be, and potential for livestock also.
Returning to the goblins to explain the good news and situation, they found the head honcho completely wrecked, half that bottle handed to him drunk. Talon quickly determined that he was simply going to die soon since drinking that liquid was a death sentence. Working together the group managed to get the poor unconscious sod to throw up most of what he had drunk though the blood that laced it suggested bigger problems. A swift healing and antitoxin later and he was snoring and clearly going to be able to sleep it off. Knowing that things had gone pretty well overall the group took a couple more crates of valuable ores and made their way back to the surface. It seemed like the new allies would be handy to have around, though easily intoxicated.
