The group had previously made their way underground, searching for a pair of chests that had been revealed by water erosion. Waking, the quintet found themselves as a trio - two of their party had disappeared in the night. Thankfully Jared and Taicho had been on their own delve and the two groups found eachother, quickly joining forces to improve their chances. After being filled in by the others, Jared and Taicho were fully on board with the relative safety of recovering some chests stuck in a wall, since they were unlikely to fight back. Though they had no set directions overall, Taicho was well versed enough with the underground caverns to lead the group further downwards towards the cavern they needed. However as they cautiously checked the way ahead their moodrod illuminated not just one, but a trio of centipedes as large as themselves. The decision to leave them be was thwarted in part as they were in the way and secondly as one got close enough to try giving one of the party a nibble. It was then that battle was joined though it proved to be relatively safe and short. Aside from the odd bite, and a few feeling slightly unwell, the centipedes were sliced apart in short order.
Taicho continued to lead the group onward and downwards, eventually reaching a larger cavern in which they could hear quiet muttered ramblings and the clatter of bone and steel. As their light illuminated the cavern the tableau was revealed - a ghoulish denizen of Salisara and his skeletal minions. Thinking quickly, the group defended the cavern entrance as Taicho prepped an alchemical bomb, handing it off to Mike who threw it expertly in the middle of the enemies. The ghoul however was learned in the ways of alchemy and not being blown up and quickly ordered one of his minions to pick it up and kindly return it before it exploded. Jared was able to lash out and bring the skeleton down but not before the little explosive was brought back into range. With a merry bang it went off, scying Taicho down as everyone else either weathered the storm of shrapnel or, in Jared's case, evaded it completely. Mike, seeing a party powerhouse go down, quickly enlarged Jared who promptly went to town and started smashing apart skeletons. Mike, deciding against his better nature, rushed in to help land a decisive blow on the ghoul only to be clawed in the process. A deadly combination of teamwork and positioning saw the enemies hacked down in quick order however as Fenix made sure to heal Taicho. As the bodies were looted afterwards a collection of old but servicable weaponry was obtained. Fenix, searching the ghoulish man's robes, found a small tome in a language he couldn't read but guessed was probably necril - the language of the dead.
After everyone had recuperated quickly, they forged ahead and eventually came to a perfectly circular chute leading downwards that had been smothed. It was easy to climb however, as metal rods had been inserted irregularly into the walls leading down allowing for steady, if slow, progress. Throwing a moonrod down to see how deep it was, the group noticed it balacing oddly on a pole and Taicho thought the light was reflecting as if through a pool of water. Mike decided to drop an alchemist fire and tanglefoot bag down just in case, garnering no response at all. Thinking what was probably water wasn't too bad on the whole, Jared and Taicho began to climb down. As it turned out, it was not water. The gelatinous ooze surged upwards to try and engulf the pair, only to push them out of the hole as it sought to dissolve their flesh and feed. Spreading out, the group began to pepper the slimey mass with what attacks they could, unsure if they were actually hurting it. With another surge it managed to envelop Taicho who was frozen by the paralytic goop, though even as he very slowly dissolved the party emerged victorious, freeing him and swiftly seeing to his acidic burns.
Making sure this time nothing was actually down the bottom of the chute, the party climbed down and found themselves in the cavern they were indeed after - water dropped off stalactites and onto stalagmites, pools abounded and a flow of water on one of the cavern walls framed what little of the chests they could be seen. After some discussion the group began using their freely obtained weaponry to chip at the rock. Choompa, searching through the pools, managed to find the long deceased body of some kind of miner, retrieving his pack from the water and being rewarded with a pair of stout axes and most importantly a proper pickaxe. With the entire group now equipped, progress was much faster. After several hours, a rest and then a few more hours they finally freed the two hefty chests. Mike, remembering that he did actually have the ability to produce acid after he recalled Taicho suggesting it at the beginning, realized that the whole process could have been done in less than an hour, but chose not to really mention it to anyone after the effort they had gone through. Lugging the chests back to the settlement was somewhat of a chore but managed in good time. Their employer, surprised to see them alive let alone returning with the chests, was duly impressed and had a quick whip round, presenting the group with a large sack filled with various ores, gems, coins and trinkets as their payment.
Fenix, curious about the tome, sought out one of the mortuary cult and asked them what it meant. Though most of what was written inside was fractious, incomplete or otherwise made no sense they were able to pick out one intect spell, one to raise the dead. They clearly disapproved of this as Fenix, full of polite smiles, took the book and backed away from them...
