As Puff, Ames, Melinda, and Zakryk go to rest for the night, their spirits are called from the Dimension of Dreams and pulled into the First World by a large city of Brownies using a ritual summoning. They wake up, rather disoriented, inside of the massive, hollow tree-city. As Puff and Zakryk wonder if someone renovated their house while they slept, Melinda prepared to defend herself from any threats.
Seeing this, one of the city’s elders, who named himself Ali, hurried forward to try to gather the party’s attention before any damage could be dealt from the more defensive of the group, and in an odd mix of Aklo and Sylvan, began to tell them of the threat they faced, and the reason they were called.
Translated by Puff, Ali tells them of how the Redcaps have begun migrating into their land, and that they would push them out of their home and burn to the ground. He tells how they’re moving in from the East, and that they could go after their leader to divert them to the north. With them seeming somewhat apprehensive still, Ali quickly offers to send a Reward back to them in Orr.
Upon hearing this, the party agrees to “chase” off the Redcaps, as Ames growls “I will devour their flesh.” Taking a small step back, Ali motions towards a guard to open the gates to allow their hopefully soon-to-be heroes out. As they pick themselves to head off, the question is raised how long it would take to get there. Ali looked at them quizzically, when one of the others brought up the for First World Denizens, time isn’t a static flow.
After some time, the group discovers a trio of Redcaps preparing to ambush them. Ames is sent to the front, to act as a distraction as Melinda and Zakryk attack from range. While Puff polymorphs Ames into a Manticore, allowing him to pound one into little more than a pulp, Zakryk fires off a powerful exploding lightning ball, and then a thunder arc, frying the two remaining ones. Ames then devours the three corpses.
As they continue on, with Puff on Ames flying in the lead, they notice the sky darkening even though the sun has stayed at the same position in the sky. Upon seeing this, Zakryk quickly speaks up, saying that he read somewhere that it may be possible to control certain things about the plane via sheer willpower. He then tries to extend the duration of his buffs, but fails. Hearing this, Puff quickly grabs some plant matter, wills into into being Green Goblin, and lights it up. Shortly after, Melinda nearly steps on a crude rope trap meant to hall somewhat up into the trees. As the begin looking around, they hear the sounds of cackling echoing through the trees. Upon looking up, the group sees a group of mutated Redcaps, with one of their arms being a tentacle. As three of them attempt to jump down to slay the party, one lands on top of Ames, who is now polymorphed into a Chimera. The other two attempt to jump at Zakryk, however both miss entirely, slamming into the ground. That's when the last one, who had been watching from above, got a surprise boot to the head from a flying Jorak, who seemed to answer the summoning late. With their combined efforts, the mutated Redcaps were swiftly dealt with. One eaten whole by Ames, one melted into a puddle by acid, and two others cooked well done by yet more lightning. Ames then cleaned up after his allies’ mess.
Moving on, Melinda this time dodged a pit trap, though not nearly as close. With this, Puff simply peered out in front of their path, and saw another trap, this one a spike wall, easily. As they passed safely, Puff used a cantrip to activate the trap, the wall swinging around and embedding itself in a nearby tree.
The sky continued to get darker as the group stumbled into a burnt-out grove. There, they saw a mutated Redcap holding his knees to his chest, rocking back and forth mumbling something. More than what they saw, is what they smelled. They were hit immediately by a foul stench. Puff prepared for battle, polymorphing Ames into a Bokrug. Zakryk had the bright idea to cast See Invisibility, which allowed him to spot the large tentacle monster, pointing out where it was to his allies. Melinda, quick up the uptake, casted Glitterdust to reveal the beast while blinding it at the same time. It took a moment to clear the dust out of its eyes, a moment that would prove fatal. After a barrage of blows back and forth between the beast, Jorak, and Ames, the beast fell with the aid of a few spells that easily punched through its resistance.
Upon investigated the corpse, before it was devoured by Ames, along with the insane mutated Redcap, it was discovered that this was a Spawn of Yog-Sothoth. And entity not at all native to the First World. With some poking around, they find a number of half-eaten mutated humans and elves. Some with tentacle limbs, odd colored skin, and one even with three eyes. In addition, they found a couple hoof-print tracks leading north. Deciding that whatever this was was probably the root cause of the Redcaps endangering the Brownies, and would probably threaten the Brownies as well, they followed the tracks North.
Continuing North, the foliage slowly twisted into more vines and briars than trees, when they happened upon a grove with a lone tree in it. Deciding to continue on, they flew past the tree which then revealed its true self, growing into a huge monster, letting out a terrifying roar as it swiped Ames from the sky. The party scattered as the monster then pinned Ames, and began draining his strength. With the aid of Puff, however, Ames was able to escape the monster’s constricting grip. Taking some slight blows from the others, and a very powerful lightning ball, the monster went after the biggest threat, and trampled over Ames and Puff. The party continued to whittle down its health, with Ames delivering a finishing blow, ripping the monster in twain.
With the monster defeated, the area slowly brightened back up to normal, and the vines and briars slowly returned to being trees. Believing the threat to be over, the party travlled back to the Brownies’ city, where they were thanked, and told that a reward would be waiting them. As they lay back down in the circle, it slowly fades to black, with them next realising that they are awake at home, and the sun is up. Some time later, depending on where they were on Orr, a reward of trade goods was brought to them. The only thing confirming that it actually happened being the bag in their hands, and the memories they had. But isn’t that true for most things?
