Above Salisara, Fenrir bumped into Jared and the pair conversed about the job opportunities below. Heading downwards, the pair similarly bumped into Fenix who was happy to see both Fenrir and his new acquaintance. 'Pallus' entered, fully armoured and wary, only to back away as Fenrir's wolf went on alert at him. Regardless the group caught up to Pallus as he made his way to a nearby enclave. As a quartet they heard that rumours persisted of a nearby settlement that may be harassing travelers. It was all hearsay but, as the man speaking to them mentioned, a bad settlement caused great problems concerning trust for the other groups around. With the promise of good pay the group set off on the relatively long journey, only to encounter what appeared to be a darkmantle nest in a cavern. The group discussed what to do for a fair while before the area darkened, the darkmantles finally deciding that the stationary group were sufficiently weak prey. Throwing a variety of glowing items into the darkness didn't help and Fenrir rapidly started to retreat as memories of darkmantles surfaced. The rest of the group found the leathery beasts descending upon them in the darkness, their beaks slicing through flesh and saliva seizing up muscles. Luckily it was only temporary and they pulled themselves up and fled through the darkness, harassed by the darkmantles till they won free and distanced themselves from the squid-like creatures.
Catching up to Fenrir, the group returned to the settlement to ask about the mantles, learning that in fact they had been deeper darkmantles, a somewhat more powerful, yet more patient, breed. Learning that they only attacked weaker or stationary prey, the group headed back confident in their ability to simply run through the next and avoid harm. This worked almost flawlessly, for Fenix ran into a stalagmite underneath one of the enemy, which duly descended and went to eat his face off. Rushing back, Fenrir and Jared helped kill the menace as well as another that chanced it's luck, whilst Pallus stood by and did nothing to help. Once the situation was finished, Pallus stepped in and started attacking a darkmantle because he could, getting heavily injured in the process as the other looked on, mildly confused or unimpressed at his life choices. Pallus won through however and the group continued on their way. An uneventful journey later and they began to hear what sounded like carnival music as they neared their destination. Intrigued, they headed in and saw several striped tents and a good number of performers dressed in a style reminiscent of clowns, adults and young children alike. The one in charge, a ringmaster of sorts, encouraged them all to come and watch the show, for they were all very, very welcome.
Fenrir, remembering his childhood, was only too happy to go and watch, though the rest of the group were somewhat more cautious and hung back, prompting the clowns to get closer and encourage them. Pallus, heading after Fenrir, joined him as the pair entered one of the tents to find more clowns, who agreed to read Pallus' fortune when he asked. Fenix, however, was weirded out and went to detect magic, an act that prompted action from the ringmaster. Clearly asking if Fenix wanted to watch the show and join in, he declined. It was at that point the joyful atmosphere turned sour, as clowns began pressing in to try and 'encourage' the remaining group members to join their friends in the tent. As Pallus changed his mind about the fortune telling and went outside. Seeing Fenix being accosted, and clearly trying to help, he grappled him and held in place to be attacked. The ringmaster, giggling all the while, sliced off Fenix's left hand in a flash display of confetti and coloured streamers. Pallus, considering he may have misinterpreted the situation, went to go back to Fenrir and the theFire Nation clowns attacked. Quickly forced back, Pallus constantly tried to keep his distance as clowns and clown children harassed him, Fenix and Jared. Fenix was quickly brought down, though thankfully unconscious rather than dying. His skin was tinged white from a clown's bite, pink clown markings appearing on his face as parts of his hair turned red and frizzy. Jared was similarly affected, though his condition was far more severe - his skin was fully blanched as deep red clown marks appeared on his skin. His nose swelled with blood to become a red bulbous orb and his hair quickly turned frizzy with a crimson sheen. He was a clown!
Through sheer perseverance the group hacked at the clowns and downed them one by one as Fenrir stood aghast at his childhood memories being cut down around him. He stabilized the clown children as best he could as the group finally won out. All that remained was a single doll-like clown child who proved troublesome to tie up. Fenrir however healed up two of the other children, since that seemed like the right thing to do. Naturally they went to gang up on Jared and Pallus, but were swiftly beaten unconscious and tied up like the other. Piling the bodies on a spare cart, the group headed back to the settlement to have a remarkably lengthy debate on how they went about their business, before finally being paid. Fenix gladly had his hand reattached with some very neat sewing and magical healing, though it looked like a clown glove. Fenrir, displeased at the group for their wanton acts of murder, took the clown corpses and the children back to their home, though paused to eat one of the clown's hearts to respect them, similarly contracting the skin-altering disease.
