Banding together, the group ventured down into Salisara once more. This time towards an enclave that apparently had been suffering great difficulties. As they arrived, they saw that fifteen bodies were lined up against the wall under blankets, clearly dead. Only nine remained and only four of those were lucid enough to notice the group arrive. One of them, a desperate spokesperson, came up and explained as best he could - Derro had been ambushing them and picking them off one by one if they tried to leave, leaving the bodies nearby to be found. Talon went and inspected the bodies, finding each one he looked at mutilated in a new and interesting way. After more questioning the man revealed that the attacks had started after a stranger had joined them, who had been the first to die. He revealed the body to show a tengu, getting Taicho's interest as to why a tengu would have been down in Salisara, yet alone one clearly so venerable. Regardless the group debated how best to approach the problem when the man they had been questioning, died after prolonged exposure to the tengu corpse. On guard, the group quickly began to attack the supposedly listless 'survivors' as their suspicions were confirmed. These people weren't so much survivors, but vectors for whatever had befallen them.
It didn't take long for the group to prevail, noticing that the remaining three lucid survivors had fled the fight rather than be caught up in it. The triumph was tempered somewhat by Fenrir setting himself on fire by mishandling a vial of alchemists fire as he went to burn the corpses, even though there was no discernable air current. Colossus noticed he had blood splattered on him and felt such a course of action was clearly a good one, intentionally setting himself on fire. Fenrir however helped clean everyone with his magical talents and thus avoiding any more burning. Once everyone was cleaned up and heading out to leave, Colossus noticed one of the bodies under a blanket moving. Swiftly he rushed in and beat all of them to mush, with Fenrir setting fire to one of the corpses with a much better throw. As it started to burn they all noticed the smoke beginning to fill the cavern as it caught and spread. Considering this was 'bad' the group rushed out to not only get away from the smoke but also to see if they could find the Derro for a reckoning.
Colossus led the way, emerging into a small cavern and suddenly stopping. The rest of the group checked him, only to find out he had been turned to stone. Quickly donning smoked goggles at Talon's warning that it may be a basilisk, the group forged ahead to confirm their suspicions. Confronting them was indeed a basilisk, one that looked younger and certainly not fully grown. Even so it's stony gaze managed to trap Taicho even as it was sliced deeply by him. In a game of attrition with no actual attrition, it was slowly forced back to a wall as people decided that it was harder to hit than it seemed. Through a bevvy of bad luck Fenrir finally caught its gaze and similarly turned to stone. His loyal wolf however managed to deal the fatal blow to the basilisk and Talon swiftly found it had enough blood to return the equivalent of two people to normal. Picking 2 actual people rather than just one big one, Talon administered the blood to Colossus and Taicho. Colossus, clearly thinking things through, decided to test swing his weapon at the big statue to see how hard it was, breaking an arm off and provoking the wolf. His martial prowess was too much for the wolf too as it was punched into unconsciousness.
Talon knew that such a young basilisk's petrification gaze wouldn't last too long, so the group quickly carried the large statue and unconscious wolf to the next nearest settlement. As they got there they found the settlers somewhat antagonistic, in part due to Colossus looking somewhat undead and Talon attempting to placate by mentioning he healed undead and worshiped Charon, the Horseman of Death, worshipped by the undead and necromancers. This didn't work. Taicho however masterfully took out a tea set, set his sword aside, and invited the aggressive people to have tea. This confused the hell out of them, diffusing the tension and brokering actual negotiation. When the group revealed they had killed the basilisk things went even more smoothly. At least until the conversation revealed they had clearly killed a child, and the adult was a much greater threat. Even so the enclave was willing to help them, so everyone but Akane went back to collect Fenrir's broken off arm. The clerical man willing to help spoke to Akane to discern what was going on, then fixed the statue - he didn't need the arm to repair the damage. As the man left back to his own tent, Fenrir slowly recovered and shrunk to his normal size. After asking Akane what had happened, he healed his wolf and left, unwilling to stay and put up with 'allies' who attack him.
Returning, the group quickly found out Fenrir had been healed, recovered and left and Akane was fine. The Derro were still at large and the fumes spreading through the caverns likely wasn't good. Even so, with no one dead everyone considered it a good day all round.
