GM Geckilian - Miere Klerrin (CL)
Player Loot:
Fenix: No reward - died. Body recovered and revived.
Magnus: No reward - died. Body recovered and revived.
Akane: No reward - died. Body recovered and revived.
Fenrir: 3 Influence.
2 Influence base, +1 for simply surviving. GM note - I swear, I didn't set up the deaths.
As the group assembled in one of the settlements within Salisara, they heard that the job was to go to a neighbouring cavern and loot the remnants. Apparently monstrous centipedes had attacked outside of their usual territory and massacred the people there, before leaving. The empty cavern had then been filled with darkmantles expanding their territory. Fenrir, all to aware that he was responsible for luring the centipedes there in the first place, was only too happy to help pillage it now everyone there was dead. Traveling together, the group found a chasm fifteen feet across, and spent some time discussing how to get across. Eventually Magnus tied a rope around himself, held by everyone else, and took a running jump. At the apex he realised he had made a bad decision, slamming in to the opposite edge before plummeting the remaining length of the rope and slamming into a rock wall. Hearing a brief cry, slam and the crackle of breaking bones, the group swiftly hauled Magnus back up.
Resetting his somewhat fractured arm and healing him up, Fenrir suggested they may want to take a bit more time planning out how to get across properly. Akane, dropping a light down the cevasse, saw it was approximately fourty five feet deep, and at the bottom not only were there stony spikes, but also sparkly things. Deft knots later and Akane was lowered down, as the smallest, to investigate the loot. Once she got to the bottom the rope was deftly sliced by a monstrous spider that emerged from hiding. As the group debated what to do, and then ignored Fenrir's suggestions, Magnus took aim and beaned the spider in the eye with a tanglefoot bag and glued it to the floor. As Fenrir realised that his rope, with some shorn off the end, was now too short to attempt a rescue, Fenix blasted at the spider and caused it to screech in pain. Magnus, praying to the 'Ninja Gods', decided to take a flying leap down the chasm and slammed in to the spider, forcing it down onto the spikes and utterly killing it even as the impact robbed him of consciousness. Akane, now rescued, quickly healed him and the pair recovered the loot - a silver chalice and ruby pendant on silver chain.
It was at this point that they realised the opposite side had a ladder carved in to the rock, and the pair of them were able to climb to safety as Fenrir was repairing his rope. Some discussion as to how the wolf would get across prompted the pendant being thrown back so Fenrir and Fenix could head back to the settlement and trade for a ladder. Minutes after they had left, Akane and Magnus were suddenly beset by crossbow bolts, a segment of a patrol lured by the echoes of the spider screeching and party crying out. A couple of shots swiftly saw Magnus getting to know the ground well as Akane stugged to even be able to see what was shooting at her. With the aid of her fox she was able to light up what appeared to be a pair of drow, cruelly laughing at her predicament. Eventually she dropped to the ground to prevent the bolts from hitting her and healed Magnus, only to regret her actions as the closer drow, who had been waiting, charged and slashed in to her with his scimitar. As Akane succumbed to her wounds the drow turned to his companion and continued to laugh. Magnus, recovered enough to stand, slowly stood and aimed to attack the drow from behind as the second adversary just laughed harder, confusing the about-to-be-ambushed drow.
Sadly Magnus just missed and, alerted, the drow spun round and giggled, slashing down and fishing Akane off as Magnus failed to stop him. With a last burst of strength Magnus went to grab the drow and wrestle him around and in to the pit. The scimitar found its mark however and Magnus was slashed in to unconsciousness, but not before he had grabbed hold. His unconscious form pulled panicked drow down accompanied by the other drow's laughter as the pair plummeted to their deaths. Walking up to all the bodies, the surviving drow flipped a silver coin down to Magnus' corpse out of sheer respect for his sacrifice, then left still laughing to himself.
Meanwhile Fenrir and Fenix had reached the settlement and asked to trade, only to be told that a rope bridge was concealed in the ceiling over the gap to allow people to travel out and prevent enemies traveling in. Armed with this new knowledge, the pair returned to their allies to find them both dead and with a badly injured fox, Akane's familiar, distraught. Lowering the bridge, the pair collected all the corpses, and more importantly the silver chalice and drow body for increased financial gain, then returned to the settlement to help bring their allies back. As they were talking to their employer and showed him the drow corpse, he remarked that it was likely from a dangerous drow raiding party. Fenrir suddenly turned to Fenix and exclaimed that he'd forgotten to raise the bridge. Fenix looked mildly confused and said "What?" before a bolt sailed from the darkness and killed their employer. The drow had followed and were attacking! Needless to say, Fenrir and Fenix fled and ran for over twenty minutes, dearly out of breath at the end, as they reached the next grouping of people. Alarmed by the mention of drow, the apothecary there bundled everyone up and they quickly migrated to a safer location before using blood ritual magic and brought Akane and Magnus back to the land of the living in exchange for the drow corpse and all the loot they had recovered thus far.
Magnus, wishing for a respite, decided to head up to the surface and called it a day. he remaining three however decided that taking on three drow, to prevent themselves being hunted in general, was a good idea. As such they traveled overground back to the cavern where they were sure the drow still were, as they were likely to be torturing those that had managed to capture. A lot of discussion prompted little more of a plan than 'be quite, obscuring mist and wait till they get close'. Sneaking in was quickly hampered however as Akane, unable to see in the dark at all, tripped over some rocks and made enough noise to alert the drow. Thinking quickly, Fenrir triggered his obscuring mist to protect them from being fired at, only to find that the drow sorceress leading the raiding party didn't much care about the mist and fired indiscriminately in to it, gravely wounding Fenix and Fenrir. Rushing forwards, several choice hits saw the female drow leader and her female bodyguard quickly dispatched though the male drow, the laughing one from before, was holding his own. Fenrir casually remarked to the male drow that his allies weren't being much help and were a bit poor to be honest. Regardless Fenix, wanting to help, threw a light rock in the general direction of the fight and hit Fenrir on the head and nearly knocked him out, before running up to the drow utterly unarmed.
Looking incredulously at this insane man, the drow agreed with Fenrir that he clearly wasn't kidding, then casually ran Fenix through with his scimitar and killed him instantly, as already wounded as he was. Taking a step back, the drow quickly proposed a truce - since his female minders were killed he was free, and he'd leave in peace if given the option to do so. Fenrir, still reeling from Fenix's crazy actions, took the drow up on his offer and allowed him to retreat. As the mist dissipated and Akane was able to see thanks to the light rock, she saw Fenix's body and asked what had happened - Fenrir still didn't really know, but the sacrifice had kept him alive at least, so didn't care.
After looting the surrounding area and drow, Fenrir and Akane gathered the four tortured survivors and returned to the apothecary to have Fenix brought back, still marveling at his poor tactical choice of standing next to the man with a big sword whilst unarmed and unarmoured. Fenix was dutifully brought back and Fenrir considered the day a success, as he hadn't died unlike literally everyone else.
