Grouping together in the Caverns of Echoes, the intrepid group journeyed through a region of Salisara towards a small enclave of no more than twelve individuals in the search of a paying job. The darkness concealed a deadly threat however - a darkmantle! Though it's ambush failed utterly, the heroes found themselves unable to hit the thing, going down one by one to it's snapping beak and grappling tentacles. Only Choompa and Fenrir's wolf were able to finally kill the beast, before dragging everyone to the settlement for aid. Assistance was duly provided by a kindly scholar and practitioner of the arcane arts called rathiel, though Fenrir's scrolls were used to do so. Explaining that the paying job was for darkmantle skin and eyes, he remarked that having already killed one they were fairly lucky in that regard at least. Choompa, Fenix and the wolf set out to recover the first body whilst Fenrir and Talon stayed behind in the safety of the camp to recover. An easy take it wasn't however, as a second darkmantle had settled at the corpse! A hard won fight later and once again Choompa and the wolf returned with an unconscious Fenix, further beak gashes on his face.
Offering care and shelter, the settlement allowed the group to recoup as they planned how to assault a darkmantle next below the cavern. Several plans later and the group saw themselves ambushed by first one, then a second mantle. Poor Talod's face was sliced to shreads as he collapsed in a flurry of bites and leathery flapping. The rest of the group, horrified, fled as Talon was bodily carried in to the nest. More rest and more planning saw the group plan the recovery of Talon's body. The plan that somehow won out was to find a bigger predator and lure them to the darkmantles to wipe out the next. Using meat broth, the group eventually found and lured 3 monstrous centipedes of a massive length of over ten feet long! The plan almost worked perfectly, a pair being lured in to the next and attacking the darkmantles as the third chased Fenix for a while. Rumination on the plan led Fenrir to realise all they had done was replace the 'mantles with bigger, and thus worse, monsters.
More rest and another plan later, Choompa was clinging to the back of the wolf as it raced in to 'fetch' the corpse, ready for the goblin to grab the body and then ride the wolf out to safety. sadly the centipedes saw this plan coming, literally. A swift bite later and Choompa bounced free of the wolf, landing next to Talon's body as the wolf continued to run before realising that Choompa wasn't with it. A quick rush later and Choompa was again mounted and fleeing as best he could, though the centipedes were having none of it, lashing out and almost slicing through the poor wolf who was rapidly bleeding out. Distracting one of the centipedes with a well timed glowing rock, Fenix gave Choompa the reprieve he needed to grab the unconscious wolf and flee again, Fenrir grabbing the wolf and Fenix grabbing Choompa and legging it as fast as they possibly could.
After catching their breath the group realized the centipedes had left talon out in the open, having gone back to their preferred prey, the dead darkmantles. Sneaking forwards, Fenrir managed to recover the body and hand it over to a pair of mortuary cult attendants at the settlement. Another few days of rest and not only was everyone healthy, but Talon himself was back on his feet, albeit without massive chunks of his face, in thanks for the darkmantle corpses they had managed to recover. All in all not the most successful week, but at least they were all still alive...
