About Me:
Hi, I’m Jay.
I’m a 28 year old Army Veteran currently residing in the Netherlands (Holland). I played in a pathfinderized version of AEG’s World’s Largest Dungeon for about a year, a few Dnd 3.5 table tops, a little World of Darkness chats, a little this, a little that. I love lore intensive games like skyrim. I like Nordic themed characters, immersive environments and moral conundrums that leave few ‘right’ answers. I play devil’s advocate fairly well in my own humble opinion. If a game makes me uncomfortable or a surprised, I think it’s been an entertaining session.
My musical taste is 50’s and 60’s rock and roll and classic county. Favorite TV shows are Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, and the Walking Dead, and surprisingly Allie McBeal (Don’t judge me, I like the short fucking skirts). I like horror movies, to be shocked and horrified. I have a cat named Oreo, who is apparently a couch goblin. Games on PC or console I’ve played are Fallout, Skyrim, Doom, CoD: Black ops 1 &2. I love spoilers.
Strengths:
Preparation. I do have a fair bit of time to prepare for sessions and I like plot arcs that players can step away from to pursue their interests and just come back at a later time. I like to think I make encounters fairly entertaining, interesting and dynamic without being corny or contrived.
I take direction well and I don’t get butt hurt if someone tells me I did something wrong. Roger that, I’ll fix it. I am firm, friendly and more or less fair.
I fancy myself a wordsmith and like to paint pictures with my words and bring your character’s actions to life and make if fulfilling. I love doing Impressions and giving NPC’s a unique tone and timber for the player’s enjoyment
Weaknesses:
I hand-wave. I Fudge. I hate player-slaying. I am not very good with roll20, but I’m getting better. I can be a touch blunt but I am nothing if not professional. I’m still learning, I’m comfy GM’ing lvl 1-7, higher is when things can get fuzzy but I’ve done up to level 12 that turned out ok. I don’t like awkward mechanical interactions, so if things get difficult, I’m just as liable to just make a ruling and look up how it was supposed to go.
GM Style:
I tend to think as realistically as I can. A monster’s Tactics, Techniques and Procedures matter as much as if they are real and really trying to survive/kill your character. (if they are to maintain suspension of disbelief.) The “why” is as important as the “who, what, when, and where” of any encounter. I have a firm belief that there are very few completely combat encounters. As such, I often allow a sense motive or perhaps Knowledge (Appropriate Know-thingy) to give characters a sense of if the party is evenly matched, or outmatched, or that they outmatch them. It might be magnanimous for the party to try and offer a nonviolent solution, even worse, if they didn’t offer a nonviolent solution is that tantamount to negligent homicide? (Goblin-cide? Pixie-cide? Is that even a thing across species?)
All that aside, I don’t shy away from mature themes, as long as it’s done tastefully (Cannibal jokes nonwithstanding). There are EVIL creatures in the multi-verse and odds are your character will come into contact with them. For every benevolent lammasu, there is a balor, and if he’s not your boss, then you’ll probably have to stop his dastardly plan. If someone has a particular trigger, I will be sensitive to that. That said, I’ll never have a child die ‘on screen,’ and I’m loathe to even have the players discover the remains of a child.
