I have a bow-based Stalker who will eventually become an Umbral Blade, using the Weapon Group Adaptation feat to apply the Shadow Blade ability to his bow. Part of the shadow blade's description says:
Whenever he wields a weapon from the associated weapon groups of the Veiled Moon discipline, as a swift action the blade may be changed and altered by his promise to this darkness, resulting in it becoming a blade of ephemeral shadow and writhing smoke... As the shadow blade is comprised of his soul's dark energies and the energies that he wields as a Veiled Moon disciple, he may add his initiation modifier to the weapon's damage in place of his Strength modifier...
That's all well and good for melee weapons, but the rules for bows make it a little wacky. Strictly by RAW, one could argue that you'd need a composite bow, since that's the only way to get a STR bonus to then replace with WIS. However, that's due to the physical properties of the weapon, and it's clear from the text that the "shadow bow" is no longer a physical object but an extension of the wielder's soul. The power comes from the strength of his will rather than the strength of his arms.
So... can he get the WIS bonus to damage on a normal bow, or does it require a composite bow?

You would have to use a composite bow, otherwise you would have STR to Damage to replace. That said well it works by RAW I think using it with a bow may be against RAI.

Well, obviously Umbral Blade is intended as a melee class, which is part of the reason I want to try it with an archer. It could be really cool or really terrible, but either way it's at least an interesting way to go off the rails a bit rather than just <generic PoW build #27>. Reading through the PoW rules, and especially the prestige classes, I see a lot of stuff there that doesn't seem very well thought-out unless you play exactly as the authors envisioned, so I'm trying to think about it now.

The key skill for Veiled Moon is Stealth, and its associated weapon groups are light blades, double weapons, and spears.
Whenever he wields a weapon from the associated weapon groups of the Veiled Moon discipline....
How are you getting this to work on a bow?
