I would like to submit my application to be a GM here at Dragonsgate.
About me and qualifications:
I'm a 29 year old attorney, recently married with no kids. I live in North Carolina. (EST United States) I've been gaming for around 20 years (RTS, 4x, RPG primarily) and have been into tabletops for about 15, though I have gone a few years between sessions from time to time. My first system was 3.5, and I switched over to Pathfinder because 3.5 just got too confusing and 4e did not impress me. 99% of my experence is in either 3.5 or Pathfinder, and I have been a GM and PC in both systems.
As a GM, I found that my sessions greatest strengths were pacing and detail/story-telling. This was because I would often meticulously go through all the details prior to a session and have a solid cheatsheet, so as to limit the time I spent looking around for stuff. I'm not sure that I still have that kind of time, but it would certainly still be the approach I would take to setting up a session. I'm not particularly creative, but I can proudly say that very few of my sessions or campaigns started in a tavern for my live sessions. My voice acting is subpar and I typically make up for that weakness with stronger attention to describing the scene and mannerisms. While I wouldn't consider myself an amazing GM, I feel comfortable behind the screen and running a session.
My biggest weaknesses that will effect my ability to GM in DG are: my voice acting, time, and unfamiliarity with Roll20. DG is my first experience with online tabletop gaming. I was not prepared for how important audio is to a session and still have trouble working with Roll20 from time to time. Additionally, the typically 4 hour session is hard for me to work into my schedule.
To offset these rather large weaknesses, I want to focus on bring in a PbP element and shorter sessions for those so inclined, like myself. Lately I have heard a lot of interest from the players, and it convinced me that I may be able to find a niche here as a GM. Plus as I continue to play more, I expect I can overcome some of those issues and perhaps I will be able to contribute in the more traditional sessions as well. Additionally, I would be happy to help in the player approval section or in other areas if requested.
Given that nobody currently is doing PbP here and there is no basis for handling them, I was figuring to do some combination of PbP and Roll20. Most of the RP elements and everything between combats would be handled largely via post at the convenience of the players. Then any rolls and combat encounters would be handled in Roll20. Ideally, the players and I would be able to come up with a agreeable time and we could handle the encounter in a single quick 45-90 min session and then after combat return back to the forums.
Welcome to answer any questions anybody has. Either reply/message me here or shoot me a PM in IRC. Thanks.
