Not long after Geoffrey's death outside the Town hall in the streets of Rook, the following article is published in the local Rook Times -
A Minor Death - Adventurers the cause?
Scant days ago a young elven child was found brutally murdered in the centre of Rook, cradled by a party of so called 'adventurers'. As the nefarious group were hauled off to the local Watch House to no doubt face justice for their deeds, several onlookers expressed their concern for the state of Rook.
"I saw it all!" says Ruprech Kleinner, 33, a modest tailor boon and raised in our good city. "They appeared out of thin air, and took a large sack of money from some elven woman. She left them with the child and bam! Soon as she was gone, they killed him! Fell to the ground, stone stead, bleeding from the back of his head!" Ruprech, long a previous supporter of the mercenary and adventurous souls of Rook, admits to being almost forced to reconsider his views of such persons in light of these recent events. "You just can't trust people these days. They'd already been paid, why would they just kill a child? It's monstrous." Ruprech added, clearly shaken by a sight that will no doubt haunt him.
Several other prominent citizens, who wish to remain nameless our of fear for their own safety at the hands of such reckless vigilantes, also expressed valid concerns as to the safety of those within Rook's walls whilst adventurers roamed the streets. "They used to keep to the slums, but now they're everywhere." says one, with another adding, "Considering what they do for coin, it's no wonder we're all at risk, for the right price." Several citizens have even reported that the mere presence of these ruffians are what caused the spate of recent abductions and murders of the magically gifted within our fair city. "If they up and left the attacks would follow them. Most of the more open magic users in the city are adventurers themselves!" states one courageous citizen, his resolve clear even though such sentiments may make him a target of the very people who claim to protect us.
It all begs the question - to what lengths will these self-appointed 'heroes' and 'heroines' go within the boundaries of Rook should it line their pockets with gold? Only time will tell, but one thing is clear - if even an innocent child isn't proof from the 'help' these adventurers provide, how can anyone feel safe?
