I have a question about how a team of Craftspeople might affect my crafting ability.
Let's say I have a character with Craft(Armor) who owns a smithy with a Forge. The Forge's description says it counts as masterwork tools, which would grant a +2 to my craft check. That seems simple enough. Now, what happens if I also hire a team of Craftspeople? Ordinarily, the team would give a +4 to the capital check, but that's kind of boring and less cost-effective than, say, a Courtyard or Garden. According to the description, it's a team of three 4th-level Experts with 4 ranks in a Craft skill, which would imply a minimum take-10 check of 17.
Here are a couple of possibilities I've considered. I'd like to know if any of these might be allowed:
- If one or more of my Craftspeople have ranks in Craft(Armor), they could give an additional +2 on my craft check, as if using Aid Another. To prevent abuse, let's say that it's only +2 no matter how many workers I have (so the total bonus for the building would be +4: 2 for the Forge and 2 for the team).
- If one or more of my Craftspeople has ranks in a different skill, say Craft(Weapons), they could build such items for me as long as I have the appropriate facilities. Again, for the sake of balance, let's say that they are not capable of creating masterwork items, despite whatever bonuses they might otherwise get.
- Related to the above - the crafting rules say that creating masterwork items is effectively 2 components: the base item at whatever DC it has, and the masterwork part with a 20 DC. So, my workers could create the base item while I work on the masterwork component, thereby reducing the time to build it.
