Druids are awesome. In general, they are awesome. A follower of The Green Path through and through, cherishing the land around you and in many cases helping to maintain a balance that preserves nature. You can be one who has a dire lion as a best friend, can talk to trees and turn into a giant elemental. You can cast a number of amazing and useful spells.
Now that being said, Why are they so scarcely played? In 12 pages of approved characters there are only 10, 6 of which are in the last 3 pages. Maybe it's because people just love frontline fighters and arcane casters. Maybe they just don't like nature and would rather spend their days pouring oil on a duck. Whatever the case is, I think the reason is clear. Druids are lacking. Here are a few ideas that might help make them come back.
Idea 1) I propose, Druids at first level are able to to choose between spontaneous casting cure spells, like the cleric, instead of Summon Nature's Ally. (Or even let then do both.) This will also make them more viable hearers/support, leaving them not to have to memorize cure spells and can instead keep utility or damage spells on hand. (This is an especially good change, considering the limitations on summoned creatures here in DG.)
Idea 2) This proposed idea, is one we use in our table tops and it's come around to make druids a lot more fun. It would also make the first proposed idea irrelevant. Make Druids Spontaneous Casters. Druids have a lot of spells, the potential for their utility has always been amazing. They have so many useful specific scenario spells that are very rarely memorized. Perhaps Idea 1 would help enough, but I think it's only just touching the surface.
If you're worried that having access to to many spells known would be a problem. You could do as we do at our table. Use the spells from the CRB as their base spells known, if a druid wants to use something out of a different book, replace one of the original spells with said spell. (The details of switching spells out, could be as simple as replacing them during downtime prior to a session. There's probably a number of different ways it could be handled.) I imagine there is plenty that could come in play, to help limit this back, should it feel to overpowered.)

So that's about all I've got, figure I'd toss those in there. ^^ Love to hear folks thoughts.
