I had an idea that seems a little off the wall, but could work. I'm making this post effectively to ask GMs whether or not it would be allowed, and how exactly would it be treated under the downtime rules.
The idea is simple, create a business in Rook that makes money by charging people for the delivery of letters and small packages via trained hawk. As far as I have been able to tell, this is something hawks are capable of RAW, not 3pp.
Hawks are tiny animals with a Strength of 6, so their light load is 10lbs, and their max load is 30. They could easily be fitted with a belt pouch or similar container that has a capacity of 10lbs and weighs around 1/2 a lb itself. Hawks have a fly speed of 60ft with average maneuverability, thus their overland movement speed should be close to that of a light horse, which has a movement speed of 50ft. This would put the hawk's travel speed per day at around 40 miles, or around 5 miles per hour. Though in actuality it's probably a little faster than that, and hawks have the nice benefit of not having to worry about difficult terrain and being able to fly in straight lines toward their destination. Hawks can easily be trained with the trick "Deliver" with just 7 days of downtime and a DC 15 Handle Animal check. The Deliver trick is as stated:
"The animal takes an object (one you or an ally gives it, or that it recovers with the fetch trick) to a place or person you indicate. If you indicate a place, the animal drops the item and returns to you. If you indicate a person, the animal stays adjacent to the person until the item is taken. (Retrieving an item from an animal using the deliver trick is a move action.)"
They can also be taught the Serve trick with the same amount of time and Handle Animal DC, allowing NPC managers to be able to order the hawks around and manage the business in the PC's absence.
Hawks cost 18gp a piece, and can live off of two servings of bird feed a day for 10cp per bird.
So, if I were to acquire around 8 hawks(the maximum that could comfortably live in an animal pen at once), train them, and then build a premises that at least includes a storefront, animal pen, and storage space, and then hire an animal handler to keep shop in my absence, what kind of income could I expect from the endeavor?
I admit, I don't have a perfect knowledge of how running a business in downtime works, so please feel free to correct me on any mistakes/ignorance of rules.
