With the various adventurers meeting up at the 'Plow and introducing themselves to each other, as several seemed to be new faces, it was inevitable that a job would land in their lap like some capricious yet convenient narrative. The pair of merchants who were involved in The Emporium had yet another task - someone or something seemed to be literally undermining their building under construction, and this boded ill for the structural integrity of the store. It wouldn't do to have it collapse on opening. The liability would be immense. As such the adventurers accepted a job to explore the sewers and clear out whatever was causing the issue. After deciding they didn't really need any supplies at all, they set off out of the slums. It was at this moment they noticed the guards taking immense note of Goot, since a goblin outside of the slums was currently... disagreeable. Thaedius managed to head off any confrontation by accepting that Goot would have to travel through the sewers, causing the entire party to go down there and take a longer route in order to all stick together.
It wasn't long before they heard skittering and looked through the darkness till monstrous centipedes revealed themselves and crawled towards them at speed. Though they gave it a bit of a go the centipedes were frankly rubbish and got promptly smashed apart like the vermin they were. Enthused by the apparent lack of danger they soldiered on. bailoch was repeatedly troubled by his heavy armour and the slick floor, often falling in to the stream of excrement. This wasn't the nicest of experiences for him. Eventhually however they came across a pair of comparatively massive maggot-like leeches which were identified by Thaedius as beings not of this plane. Emirates or something? The party charged in as the maggots headed towards them, vomiting streams of viscera and even more smaller maggots. "Fat Sal" as he was known to his new friends stepped up to the occasion and proceeding to hack one apart and the other was swiftly dealt with.
As the party continued on, both Goot and Fat Sal were slightly troubled by a strange humanoid rat-like individual constantly skirting ahead just flickering in an out of the range they could see. Eventually his ambush struck and Thaedius was slammed to the ground with a heavy crossbow bolt. Lighting torches and spreading out allowed everyone to narrow don where he was hiding and soon the game was up. Emerging from his excellent hiding techniques, the would-be assassin attempted to bring down more of the adventurers was was swiftly, and brutally, bombed to death by the pair of alchemists. As they went to haul his body from the unpleasant stream they found his flesh to almost melt off, revealing a perfectly normal skeleton. Barley identified the use of a transmutation spell to alter the physiological makeup of their assailant. Regardless, the masterwork heavy crossbow was welcomed. Since most of the party were heavily injured they briefly left the sewers, aside from Goot, and received healing at a small nearly temple. Swiftly returning to the sewers saw them coming across the foundations of the upcoming store, only to come across a golem made from fecal matter and refuse.
With a remarkably well practiced amount of timing everyone attempted to take it out swiftly in one go. Though bombs blasted chunks from it, weapons and spells seemed somewhat ineffective until Fat Sal stepped forwards to show them all how it was done. With a few swift and decisive blows he utterly wrecked the thing at slight range, showing both Thaedius and Bailoch in acidic slime. Barley had the presence of mild to look upwards and saw an almost theatrically dressed mage, in crimson robes and wearing a face scarf, attached to the ceiling. When he was discovered he gasped and swiftly faded out of view. Though Barlay was determined to pursue him, the mage appeared to elude his grasp. With a dramatic flash of smoke and mist in the street concealing the mage's actions, Barley ran forwards and nearly fell down in to the sewer. Hearing the man running away down there he quickly followed with Bailoch following close behind. The entire party managed to follow suit and explored the nearly surrounding sewers even though the faint running noise had swiftly disappeared after a few moments of looking around. The party resigned themselves to the escape of the wizard and returned to The Golden Plow to inform the merchants of the strange assailants with Barley taking care to mention the elaborate arcane rune on the front of the mage's robes which apparently translated across as concealment and secrecy.
Thanking them for their work and information the merchants happily paid them and were on their way. A pretty good start for the newcomers to the city.
