SUMMARY
After a lovely supper of the Spiggot's famous stew, and an odd conversation with a goblin orphan, the group found itself waiting for a man who had information that would help Esre obtain a direbat. She had recognized him as her previous employer, a man who had hired her to clear out a goblin temple and return its religious artifacts. The strange goblin gentleman in his dapper suit, and top hat gave Esre a lead on where she might find a direbat, which happened to be a cave that held an ancient goblin idol. He offered coin to see the idol discretely returned so that it may be stored, to prevent any further use by dangerous cults. Esre, realizing she had never asked her employers name from their previous interaction inquired, and he was quick to tell her that he was called Dakid.
The party arrived at the site and crept through the cave, and while they were deciding which fork in the tunnel to take, they heard a nose from the northern tunnel. They crept closer until the rotted form of a ghoulish goblin came into view, it had been gnawing on bones from a gigantic pile of headless skeletons, but now gibbered excitedly at the prospect of delicious flesh. The party stood their ground, as the insatiable fiend dropped the bone it had been gnawing on, and lurched forward from the darkness. It sank its teeth excitedly into Esre's shoulder, and she found herself paralyzed. Lyon, and Usiel flanked the beast, but neither were able to land a hit, as the party fumbled through their initial attacks. The fiend was caught on the very edge of a blast from one of Caisys' bombs, but was otherwise undamaged when it bit Lyon on the cheek, and rake a claw down his chest. The half-orc paladin was also paralyzed by the attack. Caisys and Usiel both laid into the rotten monstrosity, until it unfortunately froze Caisys in place with a claw, and a bite as it exchanged blows with the alchemist. Usiel was reluctantly forced to call upon the divine, to aid her in smiting the ghoulish goblin. A few quick blows were all it took to send the beast to its final rest. The party found a symbol in the form of a pair of jaws, and Caisys recognized it was a symbol to a demigod named Vemoshek, an underling of Bookadag, the feared one. She recalled that Vemoshek was a cannibal, and delighted in terrorizing his prey. Amongst the ghoul's meager possessions, they found a potion of greater magic fang, and a potion of inflict moderate wounds.
The cave tapered off and began a spiraling decent deep into the earth. The party descended for nearly ten minutes before the passage let out into a cavern. They carefully stepped forward, and Esre perked her ears hoping to find some sign that dire bats were present. She heard a fluttering of wings, and was excited for a moment as the group surged forward into an inky darkness which seemed to soak up the light from their torches a bit too easily. As the oddly shaped cave bottle necked, the party heard a sound to their right, and Usiel saw a bit of movement. They approached, ready to smite whatever prowled in the darkness. Edging around a corner, they saw nothing for a moment, until a vargouille swooped down from about letting lose a hideous screech. Another soared in from the west catching the group in a crossfire of hideous screeching. Despite their poor luck against the ghoul, not a party member was effected, and the group quickly vanquished the flying severed heads, without so much as a scratch.
The final chamber of the cavern spread out in an oval pattern, and as they inched forward the party began to make out the details of a shrine in the form of a giant stone skull with two basins to either side. The basins had been stained with the blood of various sacrifices, and as the paladins focused their attention towards it they felt a great evil radiating from within. They pressed forward, and as the light from their torches hit the stone skull it let out a long hiss, and a black smoke poured from its mouth coalescing into the form of a living shadow. The group was hard pressed to do any damage to the incorporeal shade, and it sapped Lyon of some of his vitality. Despite their lack of magical weapons, they came together using healing spells, channeled positive energy, and a splash of holy water to end the suffering of the dark being. A final blow from a cure light wounds spell dissipated the shadow, and the group stood, waiting in silence for anything else to emerge.
All was quiet, and soon the group realized they had secured their objective. As they left the lower cavern, Usiel paused a moment, and made an observation, "Hey, this cave is shaped like a giant skull!" and the adventurers spent a moment examining what seemed to be naturally carved walls, before leaving. On their way out, Esre searched hopefully for signs of direbats, but found nothing. Usiel stopped before exciting, and declared that before she left, she would have to put the bones to rest by giving them each a proper burial. During the process of meticulously matching up the bones, the group found a single golden ring with a small agate set within it. Usiel then returned to borrow a wagon, while the group lugged the shrine towards Rook with the help of the ant haul spell. They met up, and brought the idol back to Rook, and stowed it out of sight, outside the slums. Esre contacted her employer, who excited accompanied her to view the relic, which he ordered his men to stash away safely. Esre confronted Dakid about her lack of direbat, and he quickly informed her of a third cave which would most likely have dire bats within it, oh, and another idol of course.
This upset Esre, but the goblin was quick to make amends, and state that he would have his people set the acquisition of a dire bat in motion, and the beast would serve as a bonus for the next task she completed for him.
