Costs Incurred (for those who wish to track on own Player Haven thread):
Fin Ryder: -1 potion of cure light wounds.
Rainen: 50gp potion of cure light wounds, -2 potions of cure light wounds, -1 wand of cure light wounds.
Snivel: 50gp potion of cure light wounds, -1 potion of cure light wounds, 2gp horse care.
Sabien Raith: 2.5gp 5 days trail rations.
Azziel Wolfpaw: -1 potion of cure light wounds.
Players / Loot after costs:
Fin Ryder: 800gp
Sabien Raith:797.5gp
Snivel: 750gp, 2 currently knackered draft horses at The Golden Plow.
Rainen: 750gp
Azziel Wolfpaw: 805gp, fancy stick.
Hanging out in The Golden Plow was interrupted by sounds of mild panic outside. Going to investigate, the four heroes were confronted by a pair of terrified horses pulling a flaming cart made of solid but still quite charred hardwood and empty of valuables. With no driver or passengers the guards were somewhat stumped and this the adventurers set out to see if the merchant could be rescued as well as his wares after Snivel calmed the horses and paid for their stable care at The Golden Plow.
Once the group had debated whether to get horses or not the group decided merely to walk, initially going much slower due to Azziel scouting ahead. It wasn't long before they encountered a band or slightly sarcastic hobgoblins who chatted for a bit before drawing their bows to go murdering. Several members of the party were pin-cushioned but thanks to the efforts of Sabien everyone was restored once the hobgoblins were taken down. The last was interrogated to no avail, in part due to Rainen managing to miss a cantrip at point blank range to the hobgoblin's face. Fin merely skewered him and the party went on significantly faster.
Eventually they came across another larger group and this time Fin resorted to talking and trying various methods of getting past without a fight. The hobgoblins reasoned that 50gp would suffice, the cost of a single potion. The party declined and battle began, with numerous members falling and bouncing up so often Sabien was effectively their trampoline. The party eventually prevailed and, after counting the cost, it was significantly more than 50gp. Rainen's wand was used up, as were essentially all the potions they had. Sabien was out of spells as was Rainen. Things didn't look good. Regardless, they elected to press on as they were so near their goal.
Eventually coming across a cavern with splintered wood out, which was considered somewhat of a hint, the party waltzed in and Rainen made his sword glow. This illuminated the two bugbears, causing some consternation. With everyone low on resources things looked grim, especially when Azziel went to move away and heard the most characteristically evil whispering she had ever heard. It was practically mustache-twirling. Never the less the party continued their assault and took the Bugbears down as a frightful Barghest, unusually weak for it;s kind, leapt in to the fray. After frustratingly failing to hit it several rounds in succession it finally seemed to solidify. Now now longer as flickering form, the poor thing got promptly stabbed a lot till it died, allowing everyone to loot the absolute hell out of the cavern and thus bringing back the cart's sizable haul to Rook. This, naturally, was quickly sold.
