Summary
This wasn't supposed to be this hard, Edrick though, as he launched another arrow into the fray. The boss saw the adventurers, and got greedy, and that silver tongued bastard had swayed the vote to target them, and relieve them of their gold. He was watching the massacre as it took place, his comrades were falling fast, and it was just about time for him to take off. He turned to flee, and immediately dropped his bow. The shape in the darkness behind him was barely visible, but two features were clear enough to make out. It was large, and it was close.
The Adventures had been battling a group of bandits who ambushed their camp while they were on the way to retrieve a recently fallen meteor, when they heard the scream. It was close, but well out of the light of the campfire. Whatever it was, it took no measure to move quietly after it's initial assault, and as the fight with the bandits raged on another scream sounded from the southwest. The tide of the battle had been turned at this point, and the remaining bandits were fleeing, or in a state of surrender. Moments passed, and another scream from the darkness to the east, a fleeing bandit to be certain.
A quick negotiation made swift allies of the former combatants, and the two groups kept guard through the rest of an uneventful evening. In the morning light, the bandits parted swiftly, swearing to give up their lawless ways, and try their luck in the city. The party investigated the gory remains of the two fallen bandits near the camp, and later followed the strange, unearthly tracks as they stalked eastward to the third fallen bandit's resting place. Each scene was equally grisly, the beast having savaged each man, leaving him to bleed out.
They followed the tracks to the north, which coincidentally lead to the impact crater they had been looking for. As they peaked over the rim, down into the crater they saw the empty husks of five pale blue translucent pods, a lot of debris, and the beasts. Five blueish beasts, reminiscent of lions, with tentacled manes stood feasting on a dead cow. They immediately turned, and the combat began.
The beasts were quick, and made their way to a flanking position as the party formed ranks. The initial assault left a few of the adventurers with bite wounds, as the other Akata closed in. Spells seemed fairly ineffective, but mostly due to the beings cat-like reflexes, though the wizard did manage to glue one of the creatures to the ground with adhesive spittle. The battle was quick, and several of the Azata were on the ground, but soon several of the adventurers as well. Though in the end, the party was able to bring down the beasts, and mend their fallen friends.
A return to the wizard who had hired them to retrieve the meteor found him apathetic in all things that didn't involve getting that meteor into his sweet meteor collection. He paid them, and they soon were on their way.
