Sel'jorn did not sit well with society. Being a Tiefling is more than enough reason to be distrusted by the random passerby, and Sel'Jorn generally dealt with this by just avoiding contact. This was more or less a mutual relationship - While not everyone was apprehensive about even being near him, they were definitely the majority. The problem of course is that one cannot avoid contact with society entirely - There are always things you need, things you want, that you cannot get yourself. Sel'Jorn's previous attempts at earning a little spending money seemed to always end with him losing his job simply because of unfounded suspicion, so (being the Tiefling he is) he decided to try to turn that on its head, and earn money by being worthy of suspicion!
A simple posting at the Golden Plow was all it took to get a handful of requests for someone willing to be discreet. A couple of 'investigative' requests, the odd theft (or 'counter-theft', depending on your point of view), and even a hired killing found their way to Sel'Jorn in just a couple days. Wanting to start off small he stuck to investigative jobs where he simply needed to perform some activity without drawing attention. When you spend years learning to avoid people, this sort of thing is easier than you might expect.
((Sel'Jorn does odd jobs of the discreet variety to earn income. For the time being he is focusing on investigative/espionage jobs, so is rolling Stealth [sans armor check as he just wears normal clothes around town], taking 10 and then dividing that by 2 for his gold income. This is (10+7)/2=8.5g at level 1.))
His first assignment was to tail a 'suspicious' person over the course of the day to see what kinds of dirt showed up. It turned out to be a rather pointless endeavor because the mark literally went back and forth between a few market stalls all day, and didn't even buy anything! Even so, Sel'Jorn got his probably honest pay for his more or less honest work, and honestly that's what mattered.
