Journal:
While spending an evening in the Golden Plow, the adventurers notice a rat enter, one with a note tied to it. It sniffs around for someone it knows and deliveries it to Amelia. In broken common, the note asks for help as the ratfolk have been taken hostage. In Sylvan, it explains that the shadow person was back and had taken the ratfolk druid's dire rat and two ratfolk hostages. Hunter and the Black Fox quickly chime in that they know this ratfolk druid, known as Baretail and ask for help to go and rescue them.
Returning to the sewers under the southern slums, the adventurers quickly notice that the tunnels have been covered with sewage (in places where there is not obvious natural reason to be covered with waste). Exploring through, they discover that rogues had defended the approach and trapped the area with bear traps. Fighting through half-orcs and humans, they advance until an unlucky trap kills Lucy the Wolf. Heartbroken, Vilbur swears revenge upon the trapsetter. They capture one of the rogues while another escapes. Interrogating the rogue, they learn the rogues belong to a group called the Band of Shadows.
Once they leave the sewer and enter the Ratfolk's cave, the adventurers cloak themselves as thieves and sneak forward with the Sign/Countersign of "Who goes there?"/"Shadow". There, Jazirathiel, Herace and Rev talk their way to the hostages and surprise the Orcs who were guarding them. After being freed, the ratfolk thank them and squeeze into a small tunnel.
Finally, they venture into the end of the cave and find a group of thieves trying to locate a secret door. They quickly dispatch most of the rogues, but their leader turns invisible and tries to escape. Vilbur loses himself to his rage and mutilates the body of Tricky Jim the trap expert. The others try to keep the shadowy person in the room, and when that fails, chase him through the tunnels. Catching up to him at the pool, they manage to pass him and bottle him in. Beaten, he surrenders. He reveals some information, such as showing his tattoo, but keeps mum on most of the details. He does admit that he was trying to break into a jewelery shop called "The Somber Stone".
The adventurers gather up the loot and drop off the shadowy man to the guard when The Black Fox has an idea. He leads the group to the shop that the Band of Shadows was trying to break into. There he talks to the shopkeeper and reveals the unknown secret door in the basement. The Black Fox befriends the shopkeeper and intends to come back to hash out the details of using the cave on the far side of the secret door as his lair.
The heroes gather up the dropped items, selling them (including the shadowy man's pocket fob of detecting magic) and dividing up the loot.
((Since a couple people wanted to keep a few mundane items from the rogue's stuff, what I'm doing is allowing everyone to select 10 gp of mundane gear from the rogues, in addition to the 500 gp that the sold items came to. Rev is using his extra 10 gp of mundane gear to reduce the Ninja's masterwork thieves tools price to 90gp, then paying "half" from his real loot for the 45 GP, since he's keeping something rather than selling it at half price. If you wanted to keep something else from the rogues that cost more than 10 gp, let me know and I'll let you "keep" it from loot at half price rather than selling it in bulk.
Among the things that the rogues had were:
Torches, flint and steel, rope, bear traps, shortbows, darts, daggers, hand axes, great axes, shortspears, leather armor, studded leather armor, spring loaded wrist sheaths, thieves kits (including masterwork), food, drink, rations, waterskins, cloaks, clothing, soap.))
