Backstory: Airdan Aquilan was born in the elven city of Yggdrasil. He was born to a scribe and sculptor. As such, much of Airdan’s was in some way connected to the arts. His parents encouraged him to try new things like most elfin parents did but they certainly made it easier to connect with the arts than any other activity.
Airdan was taught many things as he grew up. Both about the world at large and the here and now. His father was a scribe at one of the larger libraries in the capital. From him Airdan learned much of what the world held, from the great works of engineering the dwarves had constructed to the grand wonders of magic that his own people had worked. His mother worked as a sculptor making busts of clients. From her Airdan learned how to see beyond the obvious to what might lie beneath.
Evenally Airdan came to enjoy painting more than any of his parent’s professions. There was something about taking an image his father’s teaching had inspired in him and immortalizing it onto a canvas so that the world would enjoy. He evenly gained an apprenticeship from a minor painter living in the capital. Under his guidance Airdan learned how to take an idea and place it onto paper.
It took a few years but eventually Airdan was released from his apprenticeship and began to make his own into the world. Unfortunately, Airdan quickly learned that he was missing that something that made all great artistes great. Airdan gained a minor following of loyal patrons but few outside that group had ever heard of him.
Airdan spent years irking out a living selling out his painting to his loyal patrons when a conversation with his mentor in painting gave him what he thought could be the inspiration he needed to rise above being just a minor painter.
“Even though we do not consciously think about it, our experiences effect our art in many ways.” His mentor had said. What experiences had Airdan had up to this point? He had lived in the same city his whole life, meeting the same people every day. No wonder only a few could connect with his work.
With a goal in mind Airdan began planning. He needed to go out into the world, to experience it in the fullest. Unfortunately, the world was a dangerous place and if he went out half cockered he would probably wind up in a ditch somewhere bleeding out.
Luckily, one of Airdan’s few patrons was a wizard who happen to sympathize with his plight. The wizard was willing to teach Airdan enough to get by and be a decent threat to most common dangers in exchange for some help in research on painting or two.
It took years, but finally Airdan was ready to set out on his journey into the unknown. His heart raced just thinking about it. Would he find miraculous wonders like his father had told him about? Would he feel small next to the ocean? Would his breath be stolen when seeing the amazing stonework of the dwarves like his mother had described. The possibilities where endless, true but Airdan wanted to see as many as he could fit into this journey. On his travels Airdan heard of the city of Rook and many of its problems and attractions. He thought it would be a lovely place to start his journey and develop connections and experience so that he might travel to the more dangerous areas without fear.
