Raedric - Rough map of the area around rook.
Journal:
Branton Exports has had some issues with it's shipments to Port Derry. Two out of the last three were waylaid by bandits and never reached their destination. The group was offered 600GP each for their services, half up front and half on delivery and were given direction on where to meet their driver for the trip out. With a couple of hours to spare until they were scheduled to ship out, Jotuun and some of the others headed out to try to locate some of the guards from the previous, failed shipments. The fellow they found was on his way to being drunk when they arrived, his demeanor surly and a little shifty but nothing indicated that he and his companions took the shipment. After a short interrogation the group was able to pry out the general location where they lost their wagon, and some clues to what had happened, namely that the man's boots and other gear went missing around the same time as the wagon and that the party didn't believe that would be the work of your average brigand.
Gearing up for the road, the group gathered their horses and set out. Their first day of travel was fairly uneventful, their wagon driver and his assistant were uncomfortable taking this trip and kept the wagon to a moderate pace, necessitating an over night stay before the hit the forest indicated by the guard. Once they entered the woods the group went on alert, but that proved to be pointless for the first two hours ride through the forest. However right around mid day Raedric spotted some oddities with the trees and undergrowth up ahead near a bend in the trail. Signalling the others to stop, the advanced towards the tree and right into the ambush set for the wagon. The ambush started with a flurry of thunderstones to spoke to the horses, followed by the baying and snarling of hounds charging down the that from the direction they'd come. Most of the horses, including the ones pulling the wagon bolted, either unattended or under inexperienced riders. While the group tried to make sense of the disarray the hounds struck from behind, while unseen assailants sent flurries of sling bullets out of the trees. Each of the bullets burst into a cloud of pungent green smoke, sickening those that inhaled it and potentially rendering them unconscious.
The group formed their battle lines and a well placed web spell took most the pressure off of the hounds charging up their rear. While most of the group tried to fight off the dogs coming down the path and dashing out of the underbrush, Raerdric tried to make it to the cover of the trees but found himself being pelted by bullets and eventually surrounded by small, hooded figures with saps. Graek meanwhile had dove onto the cart, taking several stinging shots along the way, and managed to climb into the drivers seat before a flurry of the noxious bullets rendered him unconscious. Raedric's companion was next to fall under a flurry of bullets, while a group of hounds struck down Madeus, one of the large black dogs grabbing the wizard and dragging him off into the underbrush. With only three remaining on their feet, Faelyn, Jotuun, and Adraste tried their best to fend off the hounds while the ambushers advanced back up the road towards them. Adraste was eventually drug from her horse, rendered unconscious and then drug off by one of the hounds. Jotuun's horse was likewise dragged down and rendered unconscious by the pack of hounds that had finally gotten through the web spell. With only two remaining, Jotuun expended a vanish scroll and tried to make a break for it, Faelyn doing the same without magical assistance. Unfortunately the hounds, following Faelyn were able to scent Jotuun and in a lucky turn of events put him down for the count while the rest of the pack chased off the Magus.
About an hour later the group woke in a pile in the middle of the road, their gear stripped from them but their wounds partially healed. The Bandits also gathered their mounts and left them nearby, but bereft of tack. Left defenseless, and shoe less, the group set to finding stout sticks to use for defense while Raedric searched for any signs of the creatures that attacked them. Luckily a heavily laden wagon is hard to sneak away with the the group set out, armed with clubs and a need for revenge.
They were able to track the bandits to a farm house sitting in a small wash canyon. Taking up vantage the group set to planning. It turned out their attackers were a band of halflings where were enjoying the fruits of their victory, celebrating their recent victor with their hounds scattered about the grounds. Luckily the new wagon had been left mostly loaded while the halflings celebrated.
The group planned their assault and waited for the wee folk to retire for the night, spotting their window shortly after midnight. Raedric sent his companion in first to take out one of the guard dogs that was snoozing on the job, but the great cat failed to finish the beast with the first pounce. Luckily Graek was there to finish it off before it could make too much noise, but it's first yelp was enough to wake one of the other outside guard dogs, whom Adraste prompty punched in the nose. Fully alert the yard dogs started to raise the alarm, barking away and trying to fight off the adventurers while the inhabitants of the farm house roused. After a fairly grueling fight with the guard dogs the halflings started to spill out of the farm house, but their effectiveness was hampered by some well placed spells by Madeus. Things seemed to be going the party's way when Adraste noticed a squad of heavily armed and armored orcs approaching from the rear. While the party was tied up at the front, the orcs cut their way through the guard dogs and a couple of halflings trying to flee the house and moved to secure the stolen supply wagon.
Not yet having recovered their gear, the party was at a stand off with the orcs who went about the business of hitching up the stolen wagon. Faelyn and Jotuun engaged the orcs in conversation, some insults being tossed about but the Orc in charge seemed amused by their predicament and agreed to Jotuun's request to return the party's equipment, which was stored in the back of the stolen wagon. Under the watchful eye of the orcs the party was allowed to reclaim only their gear and the invaders were off with the shipment they had been guarding and what was left of previous shipments the halflings had purloined. Unsure of whether or not they were successful in their delivery, the orcs asserting that the goods were theirs, the party headed home.
Upon arriving in Rook with the last 3 remaining halflings bundled up the party was met with a furious manager from Branton Exports. Since the goods had never arrived at their destination they denied the group the rest of their pay for job, but the recovered goods from the halfling hideout and a small reward from the guard for defeating the bandits helped make up the difference.
