The chaotic eastern slums became even more chaotic as rumors of a strange man that gave away free gold to all started to spread through Rook. Back in the plow, the same rumor was told by a merry old commoner, causing the noisy tavern to empty out from it's regular patrons in approximately 12 seconds (just enough time to drink the free ale offered by the same commoner). Thaedius and Yuzuki started inquiring the commoner about the validity of those rumors when a poor puffed out Guard burst in the Plow begging adventurers to go help down in the eastern slums because riots have started, and since there were actually quite a bit of people now there, and more importantly people not of the slums, the Guard was actually forced to take measures! Gathering Doran and Thraum from the almost empty Plow they set forth.
About the same time, while Kite, back into the mansion he was working started hearing guards on the move, a lean middle aged man announced his presence to his lord. A simple pouch of what the adventurers learned to be some quite antique gold pieces was enough to convince the lord to immediately send out Kite to procure them. Accompanied by the, apparently member of ministry of trade, middle aged man and his two bodyguards, they started making haste towards there.
Like in all bars, brothels and inns of the city, the same rumor came to were kelvin was staying. This time, not quite a rumor, since it came confirmed directly from an acquaintance of his, urging is to make haste because free money had drawn in quite the amount of scum and villains from all over the city.
The party met near the entrance to the district, with rumors verified from various people coming from the district. More importantly, Thadius had managed to procure the last known location of the Oread, as they have learned by now, that was spending all that money. And things seemed to congregate around that man. A quick talk with the middle aged man who accompanied Kite was enough to convince everyone that he was a moron and not quite a pleasant man, and he was swiftly left behind, unable to follow along with the adventuring party. Meanwhile, Kelvin already had abandoned the party while they were talking and was rushing towards the Oread, trying to save as many people as he could from fires that have erupted along the way.
As the party grew near, they noticed that some guards had already arrived, lessening the effects of the riots, by separating common folk from slum dwellers. With most thugs having seeming disappear with the arrival of the guard, reaching the destination was like a walk in the park for the seasoned adventurers. Most rioters apparently having an urgent need to sleep in the middle of the streets, thanks to Thadius, and those who were rested, had second thoughts when they saw the heavy armaments of the party. At the last alley, Kelvin, with some bits of him still smoldering and an elderly woman on his hands, emerged from a burning building to reunite with the party.
In the tight alley, the party saw three muggers hitting a kneeling oread who clenched something tightly into his chest. As Yuzuki rushed forwards, a few daggers and arrows made him think twice, and from a side street a battle began. The archers tried to kill the three muggers from the back, but apparently, one of them, a bald scarred man didn't like pointy things, and so he run away. As the rest of the group ignored the emerging thieves, a second group of thugs leapt from a second alley, halting the group just enough to cause the remaining two cloaked figures to procure the bags from within the Oread's grasp and swiftly leave. One of them trying to make haste through a quite crowded street, the other one leaping above a 15ft wall!
Despite Thaedius realizing that the most important possession, a journal, was taken from the leaping man, most of the party tried to shoot the man disappearing into the crowd. Thraum made a valiant effort to follow the man with the journal. But after climbing a wall and seeing him quite a bit away and climbing onto the slums rooftops, he immediately rejected the idea that he could follow up.
Meanwhile Doran, Yuzuki and Kelvin, managed to follow a quite injured by now thief back into his hiding place. Inside a mock house, they found out something akin to a bar and enough weapons to equip a small army. Rushing forth, they fought with the, still wounded, man and two more mooks. The rest of the party caught up just before the last man was taken down. A bag of gems was retrieved, but alas, no journal. And so Thraum fed a potion of infernal healing to one of the mooks, and then carried on eating his cheek, and watching it regrow under infernal healing convinced the mook to talk, and he handed out the name of the baldie and the house where the second cloaked figured lived. About then, the party searched the room and actually found some letters of correspondence, some written in code, but others written in plain common.
The party went to the house, and in what appeared an abandoned building Thaedius found a switch to a secret basement. The battle started with Thraum opening the door, and getting an arrow in the head. Seconds later, the cloaked man threw a smoke bomb into the clamped spaces, causing everyone to lose line of sight, and causing the adventuring party to fall into disarray. Thraum disregarding the smoke rushed forward, only to fall into a spiked pit. Thaedius tried to go from a second path and a scythe from the wall cleaved into his flesh. Doran, feeling brave regardless if he was the least seasoned of the whole group, leapt in the room, and he managed to get an arrow stuck into the man's chest. The rogue, disliking that, went invisible and skewered Doran unconscious.
While Thraum climbed up the pit he heard something like stone grinding to stone. And as he climbed up, with rogue nowhere to see, his dwarven senses finally awakened and he found out a secret door leading into the next room. After a series of secrets door connecting the three basement rooms were used by the rogue, Kite managed to stab a door dead with his arrows, and Thraum broke the last one. And out of the blue, kite was stabbed. A few seconds later, A dead man, courtesy of Thraum was in their feet.
The journal, focused on studies on the elemental planes and their correlation to the material plane from what Thaedius could tell, was recovered. And Thraum gathered up a ton of correspondence pertaining to orders that this man had received to sent away most of the men under his command to various dealing and places in Rook. The information was given to the guard and the journal to the Oread, which gave to the party all of his remaining gold pieces and gemstones. Thaedius started talking with him, and showed the man a safe place to live for now, as apparently he was interested in Oread's research. He was more than happy to oblige, since the reason he came to Rook was to finish his 800year old research before dying, and he needed younger hands than his for that.
