Ryku Somi: 750gp
Walter O'Hannigan: 1500gp
Aluin Jorden: 1500gp
Ryku was called in by Commander Bergstein to address the issue of soldiers stationed to the north of Rook, fending off the Goblin attacks, being waylaid and harassed by mist-tainted creatures. Ryku agreed to gather some allies to go and deal with the problem, but only managed to locate Aluin and Walter who were happy to go along, but a guide was needed. As Ryku and Aluin sought out Ganderlay to try and procure some protective amulets, Walter managed to gather a drunk man to help track for them. Though attaining amulets was unsuccessful due to their number having been lent out to those on missions already, Aluin was able to help sober up the guide who happily traveled along with them to the north. As the group approached a small guard encampment, they noticed that the soldiers there seemed weary and there were numerous pyres for dead goblins situated to the north of the camp. The man in charge was generally less than helpful when Ryku assumed she had authority over him, though Walter and Aluin defused the situation and reasoning calmed Ryku down after the fact. Regardless, they were informed that any bear-like attacks were likely to the east where the camp had been having trouble with their scouts.
Marching there, the group found a much friendlier captain who more than willingly informed them of the attacks that were most inconvenient, and that the giant bear seemed almost directed in it's pursuits. Joining a patrol, they ranged out to find it and split off from the guards when the tracker they had hired, Greiven, pointed out the tracks were going in a different direction. As they ranged ever outwards, a mist-touched giant mountain cat or cougar of some sort pounced and gouged chunks out of Walter and Aluin. Quickly forming ranks, the trio stood together and weathered the assault as a second joined the fray. Seeing his potential payment vanishing, Grieven the tracker added his arrows to the fray and, as a whole team, the mist-tainted creatures were brought low. As everyone caught their breath and debated what to do, the telltale shrill piercing whistle sounded, and the roar of a bear sounded through the woodland as it came bounding from afar. Once more the group closed ranks and steadily hacked it apart, Walter's spinning long spear deflecting attacks left and right from his comrades as the strikes mounted and eventually took their toll on the massive creature.
Pleased with how they had done, they sent Grieven to track where the whistle had come from. As he went to check, several arrows shot from the undergrowth far away and laid him low. Loathe to leave a comrade who had so effectively contributed behind, Walter risked the barrage of yet more arrows to reach him before picking him up and simply running away as fast as he could. Resting at the encampment for a night saw the party effectively back to full strength, though grieven remaining resting in a bunk. Seconding a basic soldier to help them track allowed the group to eventually find the assailant's tracks in the woods, though he ambushed them somewhat ineffectively from a nearby tree, merely slaying the soldier who had accompanied them. Walter and Aluin raced to the tree, climbing it and hacking at the poor man who made no sound nor seemed to react to the pain being inflicted upon him. As Aluin got close he could see that under than man's facial covering he was deeply mist-affected, and thus an entirely lost cause. As the man tried to climb higher and fire, Walter lashed out gouging him as Aluin did the same, finally knocking him out of the tree to plummet to his death. To be sure, Ryku at the bottom smashed his head to small meaty chunks, before the corpse was burned.
Returning to the camp, then Rook, the party met up with Commander Bergstein once more and payment was received. Walter reported how he had taken a list of the deceased soldiers from the first encampment and then visited all the next of kin after returning to Rook, giving each family a small bereavement payment to lessen the impact of losing who was likely to be the familial breadwinner, which impressed the Commander and actually prompted him to make some more favourable notes. Turning to Ryku, the man mentioned that if she took half payment from the job then he would consider her debts paid in full due to her additional service, an offer she quickly accepted.
