Various posters advertised a job from the Rook City Guard - hobgoblins were raiding merchants traveling the southern trade road, taking out their guards via powerful charges and then killing or stealing horses before robbing the merchants and letting them go "so they could be robbed again later". With the promise of pay, the compatriots got a cart and disguised it to look as if it had goods and set out to find the hobgoblins. It wasn't long however before the hobgoblins found them, with a small group accosting them with arrows from ambush. Kite quickly pointed them out before they could even fire, and it wasn't long before they were 4 rather dead hobgoblins, though Kite himself received a few arrows and ended up unconscious with his poor second pet roc also dead. As the group rested up and took stock, 4 more hobgoblins arrived, these ones on horses. They lived up to expectations, their devastating charges either bouncing off of Ben and his ridiculously tough hide and defensive stance, or utterly wrecking Thraum and bringing him close to the brink of death.
Though strong, they weren't tactical geniuses, and resorted to the second step of their plan once the main fighter was down - they went for the horses attached to the cart. This gave the party enough time to stabilize Thraum before carefully dispatching them. Even with good armour, some attacks were bound to hit eventually. After the riders went down Kite looted everything and Ben tied the extra horses up to the cart. Instead of continuing however they headed back to Rook to get paid and to sell the various gear. This went well, though the next day reports of hobgoblin attacks were still coming in. Not comfortable with having been paid for a job they didn't finish, and with more resources at hand once again, they all headed out a second time. This time they spotted two hobgoblins as they rushed in on the road, and, though Thraum and Ben both took heavy hits, the hobgoblin pair were sliced down quickly. A mere half a minute later and arrows began to rain down, causing Thraum to run back and forth as he worked out what to do.
Sure enough, their horses fell under the massed arrows, leaving their cart quite stationary. A relatively long battle followed, with Thraum charging and falling down a deep pitfall, only to then have a boulder heaved on him by the last remaining hobgoblin as it decided to at least finish the job before attempting to run away. Alas it wasn't to be as Ben cut him down as he turned to flee. Kite, having the answer to large boulders in his quiver, shot an unfeasible number of conjured arrows tipped with adamantine and shattered the boulder in to progressively smaller bits and only mildly shooting Thraum by mistake. Satisfied that they couldn't find any more after traveling for another hour with Ben pulling the cart, the group decided to head back to Rook. Kite graciously hooked his horse up to the cart for the return journey and, though there was no extra payment from the guards, they at least maintained their good standing.
