As the group variously finished looking around the building, the sound of a guard asking if anyone was in could be heard from downstairs. Arlen, going to check, found himself politely confronted by a guard who asked for his gryphon license. Since they were endangered it was illegal to own one in the UME without a specialized permit, which Arlen didn't have. Even so, the guard and those he traveled with were only too happy to help Arlen out, with one young guard filling him in on the processes needed, how he could get a temporary license to escort Dawnfeather out of the UME and so on. Going to the local holding pen, Gaston duly filled in the forms as he chatted to the young guard, finding out that not every guard was necessarily a bad person. The one who was concerned for Dawnfeather's care was in fact the owner of a pet and exotic animal rescue, and the laws had been put in place to ensure many merchant of the UME, who frivolously bought animals only to use them as decorations, were suitably punished. After a friendly goodbye, Arlen began flying back to Rook only to be stopped by Char who had spent the intervening time utterly wrecking the first building they had gone too, dismantling it almost entirely. He helpfully teleported Dawnfeather back to Rook and took Arlen back to the merchant's house so they could continue looking for his whereabouts.
With little to no leads at the place of work and dealings for their target, Char walked to the residence and knocked. An old butler answered, already scared due to the destruction of the other building. His fears were not lessened by the sight of Char, made of fire. After several brief answers he shut the door on Char, who found this to be of little consequence as he sliced through it and walked in, intending to ask more questions. With Joy invisible, Arlen only had Char to watch as the man walked in, politely asked questions of the now terrified butler and wondered why two guards rushed up to ask him to leave before attacking him. Ignoring them, Char went to follow the butler before he collapsed, only to be shot at by the young daughter of the merchant - a girl who was also their target to murder. As Char cheerfully went to repeatedly slam her to the ground whilst asking where her father was, Joy sped upstairs unseen to search for anyone else. Arlen, horrified at what he saw, repeatedly told Char that he had to leave as what was being done was horrific. Eventually relenting, Char walked out only to see the butler get up and spirit the girl away, urging her to get supplies and run. Seeing his chance, Char just waited until she did, following her outside with the assumption that she'd lead him to her father and save him the trouble. Arlen remained outside with Dawnfeather, wondering what he would do next. Upstairs in the building however Joy did indeed find people - the mother and both sons and the last of their immediate targets. She duly informed Robert who swiftly teleported in even as she ripped the heart from the eldest son, all whilst invisible. The mother simply went into hysterics, already being quite scared, with the younger son immediately surrendering to preserve his life.
Robert crashed through the window at this point, also invisible, and lacerated the mother with shards of glass. Seeing his error, and hearing the remaining son loudly surrender once again, he healed the woman only to realize this merely healed her wounds around the glass and didn't help much in the long run. Joy quickly used a lash to immobilize the woman, asking her questions that she clearly didn't know the answer to. Arlen, seeing the window smash in and hearing sounds he recognized as interrogation and possibly torture, rushed back into the house and up to the bedroom, pushing past the stunned guards to help the mother as best he could. It was at this point that Robert felt a bit bad for the young man who had surrendered as he was clearly and hopelessly outclassed, so he deftly plane shifted the man and himself to one of his own demiplanes, offering the captive a chance to spend a couple of days training before he faced Joy properly. Knowing he would still utterly lose, and not seeing the point of wasting his time, the son followed the orders he had and twisted his ring, immolating himself. Robert rushed forwards to save him, only to be slightly perplexed as his healing magic only served to destroy the corpse further. It seemed like the boy had been some form of undead.
The mother had not given any useful answers and a small pendant was pulsing with sickly green light from around her neck. This seemed to only terrify her further and her screaming grew erratically louder. As it reached a painful peak, the pendant was destroyed by Joy, triggering a release that Arlen only barely managed to dodge out of. Where the screaming woman had been was a small crater, her remains utterly annihilated. Arlen, not to mention the one remaining conscious guard, was stunned by this. The callous act of trapping his wife confirmed to Arlen that the man they were after was indeed incredibly evil and thus a valid target, even though he still had some misgivings about the job itself concerning wiping out an entire family. As it was, only the daughter and father remained. The second guard, having fainted, was gently laid to the side by Arlen before he left, pondering his next course of action. Char meanwhile had followed the girl and was disappointed to see that she was headed towards a guardhouse, so he swooped down and grabbed her, flying high up into the air to give her little options to escape. Much to his surprise she shouted a command word and disappeared. His skills at tracing where people magically vanished off to didn't help him however, so with a mild sense of annoyance he gathered up the rest of the group to describe what had happened. With both the daughter and father at large the number of targets had at least dwindled, though where the remaining two were was much more perplexing.
