Once more the group assembled after bumping into Akane and inviting her along to investigate the swamp. After much pondering and gathering masks, suits and supplies to make the journey more pleasant, it was raised that travel would be more difficult wearing the bulky protective suits and moving around in the treacherous footing of the swamp itself. It wasn't long before the group reasoned that with all the water a boat could be an option. Sure enough the little town had three such boat stores. After a bit of deliberation the cheapest option won out and a plucky salesman introduced them to their new partners, a pair of shallow skiffs to traverse the waterways. Two was deemed better simply for more ease of turning, and the group duly paid the man and took their boats to the swamp, suiting up before they went in. Travel along the murky water was significantly easier and faster than walking on the root systems and compacted dirt of the mangroves.Thinking to retrace their 'steps' from the last visit, the skiffs were deftly sent towards the Many-Corpse tree. Those who had seen it before naturally saw the multitude of corpses adorning it, though the newcomers seemed oblivious. As Fenix and Taicho shouted warnings when corpses started rising up from the murky water and dropped from the tree, Zaleiza openly decried Taicho's skills, believing him to be mistaken. Taicho simply jumped to the other boat as the undead capsized the former one, plunging Zaleiza into the water.
With putrid bodies doing their best to haul the warrior down, everyone else did their best to combat the treat. With more and more bodies joining the fray, the remaining boat was rowed to the mass of another mangrove to gain some distance. After a few initial forays with weaponry, it was determined that the bodies were remarkably fragile. Akane and Jared were able to shake the illusion plaguing them though Jared managed to not without cost as he cried tears of blood. Zaleiza declared an honorable challenge, only to be denied as his allies first killed the corpse he had challenged before those remaining around him clubbed him to death. With the corpses getting closer and closer, the group took down as many as they could but slowly succumbed to the sheer volume of enemies. Fenix and Taicho were soon both slammed to unconsciousness, albeit not death. Akane went on the defensive and sent Aika her fox to attack, only for that to be swiftly slammed down too. It wasn't long before she too was brought low and only Jared stood against the enemy. With just a single solitary zombie left, Jared unleashed everything he had, but unfortunately all three of his attacks went wide. As it lurched forwards he was able able to strike out once more, missing it yet again. It was then that the last remaining zombie, surviving miraculously, slammed Jared down into the waiting embrace of potential death. Things looked bleak indeed.
The watching Grippli, entranced by the people who would willingly attack the Many-Corpse tree let alone do well at it in relative terms, went to dispatch the last zombie and rescue the group, only for the zombie to fall back as piranhas, lured by Zaleiza's bleeding form, savaged it. Quickly retrieving the bodies and makiing sure no one was in danger of dying, save Zaleiza who was very dead, the Grippli brought them back to the tribe and they were swiftly nursed back to health. After recounting their actions and professing a desire to still find the missing expedition who had gone to the dark lake, a scount was sent with them after a day of rest to lead them there. Once they arrived, and after making sure they were alright, the scout left them to their evidence gathering. After the example the guide had provided for how dangerous the dark water was, everyone kept a really good safety range away from it, scouting the outer edges from a distance. At the opposite side a piece of leather was found with a slaver's crest on it, ten feet from the water. This prompted a very long discussion on how best to get it without getting any closer to the water, since it was that dangerous. Eventually Jared decided to step slightly closer to hook it on a long modified stick, before rapidly stepping away.
As he picked it up himself, his hand went numb and the scrap was quickly dropped and magically inspected, revealing a strangely applied transmutation spell. Unwilling to directly touch it, the group put it in a sack and transported it back to the Guilder's Lodge in the nearby settlement to procure their payment. After duly warning the agent there, it was accepted and everyone came out richer, though possibly with a slight aversion to lucky zombies.
