Fenix, still in the settlement near the mangrove swamp, spotted Talon and Taicho in the tavern he was staying in, The Leaky Faucet. After catching up and explaining about the swamp, Fenix led the pair to the nearby Guilder's building, used by the Free Cities as a stop for their expeditions into the swamp. After some inquiries about the recent missing expedition, the trio bought the handy masks that helped stave off the strange mists. Popping to Old Man Jenkin's place, they fully suited up in protective gear, got relevant supplies then headed out to the swamp to try and locate the missing expedition and thus get a hefty payout. They swiftly found the entrance to the swamp that Fenix had previously used, being led by him, and not long after came across the tree that Jared had initially tried to climb. His rope was still there and, after checking around, the group were fairly sure some movement indicated something was up in the canopy again. This time it was more amenable to conversation either due to their party being smaller, or because they openly posed no threat. It confirmed that the large group of around fifteen members had indeed passed by, going to the north west. Accordingly, the group set out, with a gifted dart covered in resinous poison as a safety precaution, in an attempt to find and follow the tracks.
It wasn't long before Fenix realized that they had traveled further back towards the west than the edge of the swamp, yet it still stretched out amidst them. Upon hearing this Talon checked for illusory magic and, blanking Fenix's hurried warnings, promptly disbelieved his surroundings and began to bleed from his eyes and everything surrounding him became transparent. Taicho stood back and watched it all unfold as Fenix and Talon squared off. Talon was faster, his magic freezing Fenix in place. Thankfully his mind's insistence that everything really was real allowed him to reestablish his grip on reality and the tension was swiftly dissolved as he realized that Fenix and Taicho weren't hostile. Resolving to listen to Fenix next time, Talon continued with the others till they spied a rather large mangrove tree. Having defeated the illusions shrouding the swamp, Talon saw that the giant tree was bedecked with corpses and a remarkably evil looking fey wielding a pair of bone daggers was slinking down towards them from the upper canopy. Taicho and Fenix, completely oblivious to the fey and corpses, readied themselves anyway at Talon's insisted warnings. As the creature exploded into motion the less aware pair stared as a silhouette appeared. It's movements were impressively fast as it proceeded to stab everyone repeatedly.
Talon did his best to keep everyone from dying as the fey pressed it's advantage. Taicho, with a series of kicks and punches, and Fenix, with multiple rays of fire, slowly wore the creature down In it's overconfidence it began ignoring the capabilities of Taicho as it sought to get to the tender flesh of the others. This was ultimately it's undoing, a snap kick from Taicho slamming into it with such force that clearly something broke. As it slumped to the ground, Talon cheerfully took one of the bone daggers and began repeatedly stabbing it in the chest and face, just to be sure. It was then that the trio noticed they could not only all see the corpses and fey clearly, but that a whole host of frog-like faces were watching from several other trees. Though the language they used wasn't one any of the trio were fluent in, Taicho at least recognized it as Grippli, indicating the race of those they were looking at. After introductions were shared, the group were offered rest and refreshments at the local village, for defeating one of the xenophobic 'Guardians' of the swamp was a feat worth rewarding. Though Taicho was able to climb a tree and joining the Grippli in their canopy walkways, Talon and Fenix opted to be carried like children in harnesses crafted from knotted vines, much to the amusement of many of the adult Grippli.
At the village it was found that the Grippli had been effectively kept in the swamp just as outsiders were generally kept out by the 'Guardians', malign and overzealous fey creatures of spite. They were spread all over the swamp and were in part responsible for the mists and trickery that waylaid travelers from finding the Grippli, though the human tribes who lived in the swamp were less fortunate and often got raided by slavers from outside. Recognising said slavers as from the Free Cities, the trio asked about the latest caravan and were informed that the larger group had indeed passed by and encountered one of the dark lakes. When prompted, the Grippli chieftain explained that such lakes were named as though small, they were impressively deep. Those who walked in invariably sunk to not be seen again. Or so he surmised at any rate. With a narrow corridor opened to the outside world due to the death of a Guardian, the chieftain looked forward to the new opportunities that could arise, assuming slavers didn't get to them first.
