It was a relatively normal day for the group as they pondered what exactly to do. Certain rumours persisted of work within Salisara and, combined with currently being in a mining town and thus practically on top of an entrance to the underground caverns, the group asked around about potential jobs and dangers. Eventually they spoke to the mining overseer and then the miners themselves. Whilst Milene was slightly tempted by the lure of a day of backbreaking labour for a pittance of silver the rest of the group yearned for more suitable prospects. The overseer confirmed that they could go down the mine if they pleased, since he was in no position to stop them. The miners were somewhat more useful, with one reedy individual describing the body of an elaborately armoured skeleton he'd started to unearth with his excavation, before leaving it alone when the rest of his team were pretty worried by it and went to leave him there alone. In exchange for a small tip of gold, he was more than happy to lead the group down the depths to show them his find, giving them free reign to do what they liked with it. They noticed that he used a small taper on the end of a long stick held out in front. When Milene asked why, he explained that the darker the taper went, the more dangerous the air was. As such once he'd led them through the network of tunnels to the body Milene paid him a bit more for the use of the safety device. It seemed preferable to inhaling explosive gases.
After the miner had returned up above, the group noticed that the skeleton was well and truly buried in the rock, barely uncovered. Though the armour looked nicely ornate, it seemed like far too much effort to fully excavate it. Milene swiftly pointed out the taper was turning grey, prompting Zaleiza to helpfully start a small fire, igniting the air around them in a small explosion and causing everyone harm though thankfully killing no one. After the accusations stopped flying, and it was pointed out that clearly the area was now much safer from explosive gases, the group decided to explore the cavern next to the interred corpse. They noticed that the floor was almost polished smooth, with the ceiling showing striations and grooves that suggested the place was used by tunneling beasts - further mirrored by the uneven stalactites and stalagmites in the area. Feeling somewhat more unsure now, the group went to retreat back to the skeleton.
However, it was gone. A cavity in the rock where it was seemed to match the body perfectly, though the skeleton in armour itself was missing. As the sounds of metal scraping and bone hitting rock echoed down the tunnel, the group assumed defensive positions as they worked out what to do. It was then that Mike noticed Davos, his trusty hireling, was nowhere to be seen. Noticing a strange whorl pattern in the ceiling above where Davos had been, Mike feared the worst and prepared to leave, taking out a pair of alchemists fire just in case. Milene noticed the taper was now black and shoted a warning, but it was then that an insectoid monstrosity lunged up from the ground, latching around Mike and suddenly dragging him under. With the rest of the party at a slight loss how to get him back, they quickly evaluated what they could do. Mike, however, already holding the flasks, used his impressive strength to crush them in his hands even as the beast chewed him to bits. The resulting alchemical reaction caused the twin flasks to ignite, setting off the other six he had on himself as he had intended. The resulting firestorm slew the beast, and Mike, almost instantly. It also caused the tunnel to practically explode as the impressive amount of fire set alight the explosive gas that had permeated around the party.
As the smoke settled, everyone above picked themselves up and healed up, before quickly making their way though the tunnel network to the exit. It was a simple matter to pay a bunch of miners to retrieve not only Mike's body, but that of the creature that had taken him - an ankheg. The group was pleasantly surprised by Davos, who had been sharing lunch with the miners. Evidently once there had been tremors in the ground with explosive gas around, he had simply left the mine and come up for fresh air and the lack of explosions. It was a tactic that had evidently worked and allowed him to then carry Mike over to a nearby chapel to get him back on his feet. The rest of the group hauled the ankheg to a local leather worker, selling the corpse for a healthy sum as the man could happily fashion the chitin into a nice set of armour. All in all, a lucrative few hours.
