The crew assemble in the Transcendent Library, answering Varian's mental call for aid. They find the mage contemplating a rather large tome with a few devices set on one of the library's polished wooden tables. Upon opening the table, each member of the party can decipher some of the letters or perhaps a word. They soon discover that each person can read a different portion of the text and, by diligently working through the meaning of the various letters, words and phrases, manage to piece together what the tome says.
According to the contents of the book, a being of unfathomable power brought a universe (a self-contained cosmology complete with planets, planes and deities to serve as caretakers) into existence, nurtured it for a time to ensure life would be plentiful and balance could be maintained, and then moved on to create another, different, universe. The general concept is understandable, but the sheer level of information presented makes it difficult for anyone to really grasp the fine details. The group flips to the back of the book to find that it is updating itself with new experiences now that the group has begun to read it. Flipping from the back, they find nothing but jagged words, diagrams and structures appearing to repeat ad nauseum. The general sense is of a long-lasting struggle against an interminable enemy.
Lazarus attempts a Psychometry Reading on the tome and realizes that its previous owner was a rather large and abhorrent Dark Tapestry general. The group also looks into the artifacts on the table. One of them is a crystal with an odd metal running down the sides. Within the crystal appears to be a tight coil of the same metal etched with characters that the group seems unable to decipher despite their magical acumen and unprecedented knowledge. Lazarus also attempts a Psychometric Reading upon the device the next day. As the reading begins, electricity arcs around Lazarus' fingers. The rest of the group backs up quite a ways just in case. Lazarus learns that the previous owner of this device appears to be an abnormally skinny dwarf wearing a work vest and appearing excited about his work. The tight coil was carefully crafted by this person and inlaid with the symbols. The crystal separates like a liquid and he is able to insert the coil without much effort. The crystal itself was mined from a cavern that appeared to be full of them. By the time Lazarus had read this information, the artifact was hot enough to feel uncomfortable despite Lazarus' immunity to fire, and it was glowing brighter than the sun. As soon as the reading was over, however, the energy quickly died down. The group surmises that the device's purpose is to store magical energy, though they know of no way that it would be possible in their reality.
The other device appears to be a glass orb with tubes running off it along with an odd rectangular metal base. Based upon the design and knowledge of engineering and the arcane, the group determines that this device somehow manages to generate magical energy through some unknown process. Everyone contemplates how to test the devices, either by going to the First World, testing the device on the surface of a planet near a dying sun, or using the Positive Energy Plane. As they are discussing it, Varian asks for permission to perform an experiment upon Robert. With his consent, Varian casts a spell that draws Robert into a small but similar tome. Without opening the book, he restores Robert using a Freedom spell. It turns out that Robert had ironically found a library of people affected by the same spell.
Positing that the tome might also hold a being, the group considers how to enter. One group member casually touches the book, musing about how they'd manage it, when they zipped in. The rest of the group warily followed suit, with Varian and (most of) Miere staying outside to extract them if necessary. Miere sends in one of his copies and is surprised to find that he is unable to communicate with it, though he can read its experiences just fine from the book.
Within the tome the group muses as to how the space functions. They appear to be surrounded by a formless grey void. In the middle of the 'room' a figure appears that seems somehow old and young at the same time. He appears to be mostly human, but he has traits characteristic of every other race on Orr as well. The man explains that he is an avatar of a being he calls "The One", charged with using his power to create and care for many different realities. He likens each reality to a marble, with the dimensions and planes, planets and stars within. Though his task was to generate various realities, at some point along the journey he, and the realities, became corrupted, giving rise to the Dark Tapestry within his final creation. The Dark Tapestry has pierced the veil between realities and has already either consumed or been victorious in half of them.
The avatar fears that, should it also manage to consume this reality, it would become unstoppable. To prevent this from happening, the avatar believes that their best chance is not only to continue fighting the Dark Tapestry in all of its aspects here but to also travel along and learn of the other worlds created. He believes that understanding how the corruption took root may be the key to stopping it, though his own memories have been tainted to the point he does not recall how it was done. He gives each member of the group a small glowing blue sphere, explaining that each is the merest fragment of his being. Varian and Miere receive the spheres outside the book. He also notes that the group was only able to read the tome because they were of various morals and persuasions and yet working together for the benefit of their own reality. The group learns that they can access the other reality marbles using the Aetherlands monolith in conjunction with the Essences and the devices on the table.
The group leaves the book and heads for the Aetherlands to get Robert, Lazarus and Char attuned and make plans. A small debate ensues concerning the placement of the new residents' denizens, but is settled with no small amount of amusement.
