As they went about their daily lives, many of the oft visitors of the Golden Plow received a letter from Ploatus Hrook, the mildly addicted alchemist, requesting their presence for a job as their reputations as people who got things done were getting around and several of them had sold him various substances. Turning up, he explained that he ideally wanted them to obtain preferably live specimens of some spidears, a happy creation made a generation or so ago by a distant work colleague, who had set up home to the east of Rook in some dense forest. Ploatus was quite keen to study them and happily offered adequate payment and even a small potion of infernal healing to keep them topped up should anything happen to them. Snivel thought it prudent to buy an incredible amount of precautionary supplies whilst everyone else was somewhat more frugal. Leaving Ploatus and his odd behaviour after accepting the job and getting ready, the group traveled for an hour or so east, eventually coming across and area rife with some thick rope-like webbing that wasn't sticky at all.
From a small lake nearby a spidear emerged and seemed confused when Thraum went up and roared at it. Wandering over, it smacked him with a massive hit that sent him reeling. Offended, he attacked right back and as a whole the group beat it senseless before stabilizing it but not before it had smashed Snivel's warhorse to unconsciousness. Realizing they'd bought no cart, Lorek decided to quickly travel back to Rook and purchased the requisite cart and a tarpaulin to at least try to conceal these things. When he got back to the group, who patiently waited, the slumbering beast was hauled on to the cart. Travelling a bit further saw a much thicker dense network of rope webbing and Zaji went to climb up a tree to get a better viewpoint. This was unfortunate, as the hungry Spidear resting in the tree mauled him, causing him to fall unconscious and fall out of the tree. It dropped down to start feeding on him, landing badly and getting slashed by Thraum, but was undeterred and crunched a bit on Zaji's legs. This had the side effect of killing him. The rest of the party, worried about this development, especially Lorek who held almost a paternal bond with Zaji, proceeded to utterly wreck the thing. Thraum delivered a blow so powerful to it that the poor thing was largely a mess.
It wasn't long before they all found the cavern entrance to the spidear mother's lair and placed the corpse outside to lure her out as Zaji remained on the cart, still quite dead. Naturally after smelling one of her own progeny dead, she came out fairly distressed. There was a lot of uncertain looks as no one seemed to want to be the first to attack it, before Snivel walked up and stomped on the ground, a shock wave of force failing to knock the thing over. Thraum threw caution to the wind and charged, hacking in to it and mildly regretting his choice when it bit him hard. Snivel, ever the opportunist, ran in to stab it some more as Primrose and Lorek rendered it misfortunate and blind. The lack of sight however didn't deter it in the slightest as with two hits poor Snivel was smashed down then smashed flat, also quite dead. Now rather worried, the rest of the party kept their distance as Skitter the scorpion danced around it, narrowly avoiding a mighty hit before darting in to sting and actually kill it. Stunned Skitter had survived, Zorin understandably felt proud and relieved as Thraum was brought back to the realm of the conscious.
Returning to Rook closer to nightfall as per Ploatus' instructions, the spidears were handed over in exchange for a bit more compensation due to the effort and deaths that had been sustained. Ploatus was happy, though confused, to help and donated the use of two doses of salve which in turn brought Snival back largely unchanged though a tiny bit younger, and which brought Zaji back as a full elf, his elven lineage taking full control. Zaji and Snivel, concerned about their diminished energy, went to a local temple to be restored and found the process expensive but ultimately a relief. Everyone was generally paid in full and Ploatus rubbed his hands with glee as the prospect of studying the creatures before releasing the live ones again. After all, 'catch and release'.
