With a man in The Golden Plow wailing about his lost daughter, and stories on the streets about children disappearing, the intrepid heroes once again assembled in the 'Plow to ask questions and infer a job to aid a clearly distraught man with finding his daughter. As she'd been missing for 3 days, the group headed to his house via the aid of his friend, who let them explore the daughter's room. Barley and Goot soon noticed an alchemical compound spilled on the floor around the child's bed, a clear contradiction of the stories that no one had been seen breaking in or taking the children and that they had merely disappeared. As Bailey and Goot retreated back to Bailey's lab to analyze the compound, the rest of the party went to speak to the guards, learning of several other cases such as the disappearance of twin girls. They found that all of the missing children were generally aged between 5 and 9, female and supposedly had some form of artistic talent such as wood carving or singing. Finding a matching carpet patch with stains in another property, the rest of the group met back up with the alchemists who were able to confirm that the substance was belladonna - deadly nightshade, a substance clearly able to subdue a child in small quantities.
As such everyone went to check with Ploatus Hrook once more, an alchemist of scatter brained repute. Eventually they managed to coax out of him that an actor by the name of Helven Gothel had purchased a rather unusually large supply of the stuff considering his trade. Asking around led them to the Crown district which Goot had some trouble remaining in without being accosted, leading to him observing from a variety of alleys. Even with Barley's silver tongue the guards wouldn't budge, as only patrons were allowed in the Crown district's House of Theatre, even if the news they wanted to impart was particularly important. Both Bailoch and then Yuzuki tried to get personal details on the actor in a nearby City Hall, and were blankly refused. Yuzuki resorted to threats and was somewhat rebuffed after being informed that his image was being spread amongst the City Watch due to his antisocial behaviour. Eventually Barley had the idea of convincing the City Guard to get a permit to enter the building, so a quick trip to the slums and back saw them gaining entry.
As Helven didn't seem to be present, Yuzuki looked at the top billed actors and saw the main play was a tragic tale of the loss of family with Helven starring alongside a young girl. Asking to see her resulted in flat denial, but the usher did fetch the girl's teacher instead to answer their questions. Yuzuki spun a grand tale about Goot in fact being his sky niece, hence all the cloth wrappings, and that she had an excellent singing voice. Eventually the woman relented and led them to an underground audition room and Goot surprised everyone, including himself, by managing to sing a ribald goblin song, replete with 'priiiiick!' every now and then to a fantastic degree of skill! The woman, unused to hearing clearly halfling country songs, was actually impressed. Barley expressed mild confusion at what they were all doing and why was Goot singing. Yuzuki failed to poison a piece of cloth with nightshade and went to knock her out with cloth over the mouth. This failed as it was not poisoned.
The woman broke free and fled screaming, her operatic voice ridiculously loud and clear. The party, knowing this was 'a bad thing' ran and scattered through the maze-like corridors. Goot eventually stumbled across a corridor that led to a more rocky cavern, and went to descend. Everyone else eventually caught up and found him as they were effectively ambushed by a crying little girl. It wasn't long at all before they realized she had been dead at least a couple of weeks and her face and throat didn't move at all. Never the less, the sound of crying continued. The ruckus echoed throughout the cave system and more and more of the deceased abducted girls shambled forwards, dying to the various weapons of the adventurers. Thraum spent a lot of time unconscious on the floor after being beaten down by small undead girls, an occurrence Bailoch as a fellow dwarf found immensely funny. Eventually the massed waves of dead children ended and various resources were used to bring everyone back to the world of the awake.
As they explored Goot found a small leather sack in a pool of water, which Barley found to contain various jewels and trinkets no doubt sacked from the rich patrons who frequented the establishment. Further in they finally found what they'd been hoping for - a live girl. She was, however, tied on an altar residing in the middle of a pentagram and circle of blood. Barley stepped forwards to untie her after making sure she wasn't just dead and tricking them, and was concerned when he realized he couldn't see her face and that she didn't respond to his words at all. Stepping round to have a look, he was confronted by her lack of a face before the bonds fell away like gossamer and she attacked, the sound of a sobbing child echoing through the air. Though she was able to teleport a short distance away to try and set up an ambush, Thraum quickly found and pointed her out, earning more flat-on-the-ground time for his efforts. A difficult struggle ensued as three members of the party were knocked unconscious overall, just Bailoch barely conscious and Goot left standing at the end. Goot, looking around after the supernatural entity had been dissipated, found a nicely sized diamond on the altar and added it to the sack of loot before helping Bailoch drag everyone else out.
Once they got back to the corridor, eventually, a mass of worried actors helped escort them out and asked what had happened. Goot and Bailoch gratefully accepted the help of a healer, and then subsequently explained to the everyone, and then the City Watch who showed up, what had happened down in the cavern. The Watch was somewhat irked to hear there was a closed cavern system down there, but thanked the party for their efforts to reunite parents with their lost daughters. It was just a bit of a shame they were all really, really dead already before the party even got there. Regardless, the party flogged the sack of loot and Goot invested in a small mouth organ and singing guidebook to help his clearly impressive singing. It looked like the start of a wonderful new avenue of life.
