Various parties heard that once again the mysterious merchants were hiring, this time guards to ensure the large Emporium building would be protected overnight before a better security detail arrived in the morning. With Thraum, Faylen and Yuzuki all being newcomers to Rook, paid work was welcome. Making their way to the building in question to inquire as to the work, or talking to some of the merchants in the Golden Plow, saw the group employed for a night shift starting at 10pm and lasting through till the morning. The party generally spent their day either relaxing or drinking, before going to fully investigate the building around 9pm. Another merchant issued their permits to work on site before leaving to head home, and the group went inside and started looking at the materials they had to work with. With any property damage not in the line of defense potentially deducted from their pay, everyone went about trapping the place with a minimum of fuss and damage. Rope and boards were used to tie doors together and make rudimentary alarms, with small steel spheres scattered along various sections of ground to dissuade people from running from room to room.
Barley realized he had left something unattended at home, a harsh occurrence for an alchemist, so was only too happy when Goot showed up around 1am after overhearing about paid work in The Golden Plow much earlier. Goot just about managed to fit in with everyone else, though Thraum was deeply displeased with the arrangement, reminding himself it was the gold that mattered. Eventually Barley returned, asking Faylen to let him in. As he did so however, skeletons suddenly rushed from the night to charge in to the building, and combat ensued. Thraum managed to wake up and started putting on his armour, contributing nothing. Yuziki was rudely woken by Goot and tried to slash him before being informed he was an ally and thus rushed to engage the skeletons. Faylen had a fighting retreat but was brought low by some missiles of force thrown from the wide area of smoke Barley had somehow conjured, and brought even further to unconsciousness as a skeleton stabbed at him. Yuzuki gamely held them all off as Barley cried that he heard something upstairs even though Goot was pretty sure the sound came from downstairs, especially as he had heard fizzing down there earlier.
Barley and Goot both went up to the second floor and Barley 'helped' Thraum put on his armour, causing more hindrance than anything else. Suspicious, Goot and Thraum questioned him briefly before Thraum simply stepped forwards and nearly cleaved him in half. It was at this point that Goot noticed his flesh had the same consistency of the failed assassin from the sewers. Once all the skeletons were down and Faylen was brought back round the party explored both upstairs and downstairs to ensure the assailants were actually gone. Upon entering part of the basement Faylen was slammed by yet another missile of force and managed to grease the floor under the offending spellcaster before falling unconscious himself. The caster prompty fell over and Thraum walked up and split the poor guy in two. The other four limbed skeletons who had also entered from below were summarily dispatched by everyone and once more a sweep was done. It was found that the initial skeletons were trying to reform, so for the rest of the night Thraum proceeded to constantly crush them.
In the morning the merchants arrived and happily paid everyone, though stated Groot would need to find payment from the others as he hadn't specifically been hired and thus they had no real obligation to pay him. Through Thraum and Yuzuki refushed to share, Barley and Faylen were happy to as Barley knew Goot and Faylen had been revived by him. As such everyone went home generally happy with how their evening had gone.
