Primrose and Azziel were relaxing at home, with Finn and Rainen in The Golden Plow, when news reached them about a vicious bandit attack along the southern trade road. Meeting up to investigate the source of the news in one of the trade districts brought them to a pair of merchants who were arguing over the liability of stolen and/or damaged goods. A job was swiftly secured to get payment for reacquiring the stolen goods and the party rented a horse and cart. Deciding they only needed minimal preparation, they headed off along the southern trade road. It wasn't long before they came across a quartet of vagabonds who were initially friends then suddenly hostile for no reason at all, launching an attack that was hardly intimidating and instead more confusing than anything else. Finn neatly slashed one down as the rest of the party supported from range. As it turned out when each vagabond was focused on by Rainen, they died remarkably quickly. Checking for tracks, Azziel pointed out where the bandits had come from despite Fin's best accidental efforts to lead them in the wrong direction.
Heading that way for a while longer saw them spy what appeared to be an ogre at range, also dressed in the same manner as the previous bandits, and eating a horse. This overly large vagabond finally noticed them as Primrose cast some sorcery to protect herself, and lumbered over shouting it was hungry since it saw their horse. It liked eating horses y'see. Finn rushed forwards to engage it, greatly growing in size as Primrose attempted to help him. This new, larger, Finn however was not impressed as it made him easier to hit and he did slightly less damage. Still, the ogre was brought low from being stabbed a lot. This was becoming a trend. Checking everything was alright, the party went to move on only to be ambushed by a lone bowman, clearly trying to get revenge for his larger friend being stabbed to death. Finn effectively charged him. That ended quickly.
Getting back on the trail led them to a small hillock with a fenced encampment around it. Azziel climbed in to a tree to spy over the fence and saw most of the stolen supplies as well as a lot of dead bandits, then climbed down to let everyone else know. It was at that point that the manticore flew up in to the air thanks to hearing them all sneak towards it. It was somewhat miffed, and shot Fin full of spikes and went to give everyone else a really bad day before Primrose and Azziel dissuaded it with the eloquence of speech. Azziel pointed out an ogre carcass was nearby and much more filling, and led it off to eat that instead. Everyone was brought back up to servicable levels of performance and they headed back to town after loading all the goods.
The manticore was a bit of a sticking point due to it being somewhat near the trade route and frankly quite dangerous. The party thus spent nearly an hour and a half planning (irl, seriously) concocting elaborate plans to bring it down with a combination of poisons, debuffs, tanglefoot bags, straight up damage and then using manacles and rope to capture it alive and cart it to the alchemist Ploatus Hrook - a man who was willing to buy weird corpses. After a lengthly discussion and the buying of a live cow to coat in sleeping poison as bait, they set back off during the evening to find the manticore again. Sure enough it was near where they had left it, eating a dead messenger and his horse. Rainen tried to reason with it in to working for Rook and getting paid in food by the manticore wasn't much of a motivated worker and instead killed the cow and a horse before Rainen tried to intimidate it.
This resulted in it slapping Rainen the hell down, before Finn calmly stabbed it. When it went to hit Finn he stabbed it again. Then again. The trend was maintained as Finn almost single-handedly took down the manticore in less than 9 seconds. Rainen was brought round as everyone was pretty pleased, though Finn looked like a smug bastard and was strutting around. The unconscious manticore was made stable and manacled, tied up and thrown on the cart under a tarp. It was duly brought back to Ploatus who happily paid for the magnificent beast before gently pushing everyone out of his house since it was near midnight.
A profitable day indeed, resulting in a live manticore within the city walls of Rook. Nothing can possibly go wrong there.
