A beholder eyestalk trophy for everyone, Nym got the ruined center eye.
Journal:
Xavier the Blue from Rook University Thaumaturgy House asked some adventurers to retrieve the bodies of some freshman students who had been exploring some caves in search of a mythical seer. They found something and three of the four students died (the fourth returned and promptly quit his entire magical education, muttering something about the terrible eyes. Xavier gave the adventurers the directions to the cave and asked if they could retrieve the bodies.
Riding out by horse, they made it there in two days. They trudge in the dark for about an hour before they find the right passage, however Nym hears some trolls speaking and begins offering them positions on his Goblin ball team. Confused, the trolls allow the adventurers to approach and set up a surprise attack. The trolls fall to a concentrated effort of spells and Nym, with two escaping to flee deeper into the cave.
The adventurers stop one of the trolls with an illusion pit and Nym jumps down and wrestles it to death (with an acid splash finisher). However, the last troll is hold up in a wider cave and when the Countess approaches, she loses her magic. There's something deeper in the cave. A beholder.
Nym keeps the troll occupied while the beholder laughs as they beat up its slave. Countess and Ilena try to move past the antimagic field but Ilena eats three rays as soon as she clear it and falls. Countess sneaks past and tries to slumber the beholder... and it works. Nym ties up the troll with rope and they begin celebrating how they can sell this creature and such, when Countess asks Nym to put out its main eye. Nym does so, but he doesn't wait for anyone to heal Ilena first. Nym attempts to... but the beholder survives the attempt with the eye intact. And wakes up.
Chaos reins as the adventurers are in exactly the wrong formation and everyone gets hurt by rays, with Melinda hiding behind a rock nearly dead and Learon unconscious. Countess plies some more spells and Nym tries to kill the thing (or at least put out its eye) but the creature seems to shake off every spell to reduced effect. Nym is finally about to put out its main eye, but a stray ray causes Melinda to fall and Nym gets knocked unconscious, leaving Countess alone with an angry beholder. Countess considers leaving the adventurers behind but decides to heal Nym. Nym wakes up just as one of Countess's previous spells manages to catch hold, sickening the beholder. Melinda recovers and starts layering webs on the thing keeping it in the stinking cloud and Nym is able to finish the creature.
The adventurers are able to recover the student's bodies and bring all of the bodies to the Rook university, They turn over the Beholder corpse to the University (after taking some eyes as trophies) and collect a healthy paycheck from Xavier.
