Overview:
Our enterprising individuals begin with Sabien finding several interesting wounds at the slum clinic. Speaking to one of the patients reveals that she was mauled by mutated beasts at a nearby farm. Sabien recalls that he overheard an older gentlemen mentioning losing something in the area around the attacked farms, and bumps into his friend Haro on the way over to the plow. Haro and Sabien head back over, and meet up with Kite, Barley, and Jhuriel, who have all heard about a job finding some lost items in the area.
The group meets with Francis, who informs them of some experiments he was performing in a cave near the farms on some animals that had come from the mist. After he had dissected several of the creatures he had captured, some of the beasts attacked him and he was forced to flee, leaving behind his research notes. He asks the party to retrieve them, offering to pay them each a large sum for their services. The party finds the situation morally questionable, but agree to put off their decision until they look at the notes. Some of the public reaction to Jhuriel receives from his affliction cause Sabien to purchase him a cloak, and Jhuriel compensates him for it and dons the cloak.
The party ventures out towards the farm, and see hear various crunching and sloshing noises as they approach the outlying farms. In the barn and in the fields they find mutant badgers and porcupines. They defeat them, but Kite in particular has some difficulty removing some quills. After the battle they approach the boarded up farmhouse, the single survivor speaking to them through a crack in the window. She tells them the creatures arrived about a week ago, and her husband and son had both died protecting the barn or trying to board up the farmhouse. The party informs her they'll return for her, but she should stay inside for now.
They continue towards the cave, Kite guiding the way with his knowledge of the surrounding land. They venture down an irrigation channel, but encounter yet more of the mutant creatures, which they quickly exterminate. Reaching the cave, they venture inside to find even larger mutant creatures, wolves with spikes protruding from their flesh. A quick spell from Sabien blinds one of the creatures, and the party makes quick work of them with minor injuries. The party finds some poison vials Francis had mentioned, along with one his two books.
The party proceeds through the cave to find a solid iron door, which they use a nearby lever to unlock. Inside the find a pile of various mutant animal parts, and one more metal door. They open it, but sense little inside the darkness besides the oppressive smell of rot. Kite tosses a torch into the room, and reveals a gruesome construct stitched together of various mutant animals. The beast proves resilient and strong, as it downs Haro twice and nearly drops Jhuriel, but eventually succumbs to the abuse the party dishes out. Retrieving the books, the party returns to guide the woman from the farm back to the city, and after a long moral debate, decide to return Francis's research to him. Sabien however remains wary, and reads over the documents to see if he can bring legal action against the experimental alchemist. While in his custody, Barley looks over the formula book, and copies several things for himself.
