After hearing reports that a new religion was starting up outside of Rook and that people who had taken on jobs from the Rook Guard to check it out hadn't returned, Dorn and entourage decided to go check it out. As they got there aside from lion-faced imagery worked in to the stone there wasn't any actual religious iconography. The building did look somewhat like a place of worship so, knocking on the door first, the group entered. Given lion masks and politely asked to be seated for the sermon, most did so - Saathe was a bit of a dick and tried to hold the door open regardless of the fact it was winter, but eventually relented when he was about to be pushed out gently, but firmly. The preacher stepped up to the pulpit and gave a rousing sermon, stirring the hearts and minds of those that heard - even the adventurers were left thinking that, somehow, maybe working as a collective group to better the lives of all involved to achieve a greater sense of fulfillment was actually a good thing. Saathe however found such sentiment deeply suspicious, especially the references to the divine being 'the Core' who was fairly vaguely defined.
A couple of people were called out from those listening and decended the steps behind the pulpit to commune directly with The Core as initiation and, after the sermon, the adventurers didn't notice them returning. It seemed like the missing people weren't missing at all - they'd just decided to start living there and they all seemed pretty happy about it overall, and genuinely seemed to be living better lives working together, pursuing hobbies and generally working for the betterment of the group. Seeing no real problem, Dorn left with the others in tow, and went back to the Plow for a drink. Whilst there they noticed 2 others who'd been at the sermon returning and discussing their friend, unable to remember what had happened to him - he had in fact been with them and called up to be initiated, which Dorn found strange. After the adventurers talked to one of the pair to confirm details they went back to the building to find it locked, so they broke the door down.
The preacher, coming upstairs from below, seemed surprised but answered their questions and had other look around for the missing man, who wasn't there. Endeavoring to help, he got his superior Davros the halfling to answer more questions. The halfling confirmed that the man had indeed come downstairs, conversed with The Core, reached a religious epiphany, been given a robe and spike-tipped staff and mask and sent on his way to spread the word. Finding this perfectly reasonable, Dorn felt his job was done. The others, seeing claw marks of the halfling's face, asked how he got scars. The response was that The Core blessed him with it's touch and, though he lost vision in one eye and some rugged good looks, he reached a greater spiritual understanding for his place in the world. This seemed suspicious to everyone but Dorn, who understood that religious mortification of the flesh was perfectly normal for many faiths, so thought nothing of it.
It wasn't until later whilst drinking at the Plow that Dorn had a conversation with a drunk elf who joked that there had been a rumour going around that the Men of Core, led by the Man of Core, worshipped a Manticore - but having one that close to Rook underground would clearly be crazy talk. Dorn chuckled along and reasoned that even if there was one Rook's tolerance for such things generally held as long as it didn't turn up and start eating people. Saathe, sure that the claw marks on Davros' face matched those of a manticore, and sure that the spike on the staff as described was a manticore tail spike, began to try and collect evidence of this before generally giving up and washing his hands of it all. It was a lot of hassle for no real gain, so back to drinking he went.
Meanwhile, the missionaries of the Men of Core begin to spread their faith...
