Hearing about merchant caravan's coming back from the east of Rook having been attacked, with no drivers or with a headless and cauterized body remaining, the group checked with the Guard and went to an effective morgue to look at the corpses that had come back. Pondering unnatural causes, the group went to check out the cart and found the horses had a lingering magical aura on them but found no additional changes. Deciding to take the job, they borrowed a horse and cart from the Guard and tricked it up to look like a merchant wagon, traveling out along the road to see what had happened to the victims. As they got closer the air turned colder, mist arose and Soran could hear the quiet sound of a horse whinny. Warning that they were being approached, Soran and the group began to prepare before a headless horseman burst out of the undergrowth with his lance, aimed straight at them!
With the devastating charge missing, battle was quickly joined and the horseman and his steed were burnt and slashed apart with quick reflexes and dedication, only for a second, and then a third, to follow in his wake - it was the missing drivers, also turned to the cause of wanting to take heads! Slowly but surely they were beaten back and down, till a mighty, and very lucky, strike impaled Alastair and deeply ruined his life expectancy. Sabrina the large cat was similarly slashed down, and Lisa, despite her defensive antics, was eventually knocked unconscious. Dryth, in a fit of panic, cast his mighty black tentacles under the foe who had beaten Lisa, only for her body to be ripped apart by the tentacles as the undead stalked after him. Realising his mistake he did his best to vanquish it but was ultimately saved by Milo and his swarm of mad monkeys! Collecting their dead and the corpse of the original horseman, the group returned to Rook to bring their friends back and get paid. Feeling apologetic for sending them in to such unknown danger the Guard helped cover some, but not all, of the clerical costs with taxpayer money, lessening the sting of multiple deaths...
