SUMMARY:
Several signs had been posted around Rook asking for "Pest Control" and offering a fairly large reward. The adventurers headed north to the Cold Iron mining town of Draventh. There they found Eldrith Himsfall, Captain of the Draventh Guard, arguing with Trevor, the Foreman of the Mine. Trevor demanded that they need not rely on outsiders for so much help. The adventurers introduced themselves and the majority of them headed off to the inn to get a good nights rest before heading out to the mine in the morning, there being no immediate threat from the kobolds. That night a few of the party noticed most of the townsfolk going into a large meeting hall but investigated no further. When pressed about the meeting the following morning Eldrith insisted they were talking about having the miners getting combat training so that in the future if the kobolds or other monsters were to return they would be ready.
The party ventured to the mine and found a lone Kobold and in the shadows of the cave lurked several more figures. Noticing the kobold's scales were copper the party attempted speaking to him in Draconic and he responded that they were sent by Apsu to destroy a dark thing in this cave and they meant the humans no harm but when they had approached the miners the miners had attacked him and they were forced to defend themselves. Once the humans fled they left a group of guards further in the cave towards the dark thing to protect it. The adventurers, deciding the kobold spoke the truth and their intentions noble, followed the leader of the kobolds further into the mines.
The adventurers ran into the guards who fired a warning shot from their bow that this area was restricted and if they wanted to continue they would have to get written permission from the Guard Captain or the Foreman of the mine. Not wanting to be tricked or delayed the adventurers preceded and they attacked the guards. The guards attempted to take the adventurers down non-lethally but when they started to push past the guards into the next room they had no choice but to stop them by any means. Soon half the party found themselves on the floor but the rest managed to bring the powerful guards to heel, without killing them, by rendering them unconscious.
Once the fight had ended the kobold's leader approached. Behind the nearby metal doors was the foreman Trevor's room, in the closet they found a trapped chest and when they attempted to disarm it the trap went off, exploding in a ball of fire destroying it's contents, which the majority of seemed to have been documents. Then the party ventured into the next room and the kobold leader was overwhelmed with an evil aura and he had to catch himself on the wall of the cavern. The party inspected the necromatic altar with it's stone chair and the self propelling evocational forge.
After studying the forge Abrin recalled a tale to his party. Of a wicked king who summoned a demon to help him win a war. The demon created the Dark Forge and was able to sacrifice good men and turn that raw power against the forces of good making those who wear the armor and the weapons created by the Dark Forge invincible to all that is Good.
The kobold barked for his men and a mob of kobolds swarmed into the cavern in groups of four. Each group carrying large barrels. When asked about the contents of the barrel the kobold leader claimed it was "Boom Powder" that was given to him by the Herald of Apsu. He told the adventurers that the power of this powder would destroy this cave and possible part of the mine, which caused them to hurry on their way, along with all of the kobolds except the leader who stayed behind to light the fuse.
The mob of Kobolds disappeared into the darkness of the winding caverns and the party left to the entrance. When they left the cave they found themselves at the wrong end of a veritable army of guards and miners, the majority of whom carried bows. The adventurers told the guard captain of what happened and the army lowered it's weapons. Suddenly the ground shook sending most onto the ground. A plume of smoke and dust shot out of the cave and the foreman rose to his feet shouting at the party that they'd blown up his damned mine!
The party managed to calm the foreman and the villagers down before the leader of the kobold approached covered in dust and soot. Abrin offered to act as a translator between the humans and the kobolds and a truce was formed between the peoples. The kobold identified himself as Shreth of Apsu and offered to help the humans dig out any part of the mine that may have collapsed during the explosion. Shreth also gave the mayor a candle saying that if he ever wanted to summon the Disciples of Apsu to light the candle and they would come.
ADDITIONAL:
The Dark Forge has been utterly destroyed as well as part of the mine but thanks to the Kobolds and Abrin's assistance the mine will not suffer delays on collecting Cold Iron. Ilena did not give the guards back their weapons , the guards did not notice the weapons were missing as they assumed they had been left in the cave, and has dibs on one of the masterwork crossbows.
