Parties have delved into this "mansion" before at the bequest of Lord Remmont, a somewhat dubious man who has tried to stiff them out of pay more than once. They have learned the following information:
The house appears to be in a struggle of its own. It is made from a material found in the Positive Energy Plane that doesn't normally exist for long once leaving the plane. The stone can apparently be manipulated by characters of Good heart through an effort of will.
The house is legally owned by Lord Remmont and some associates of his. The Master of the house is apparently a ghostly figure on the second floor who still had enough power to will the house to heal the party as well as summon several elementals to test them with. The Master's body is being used by someone who attacked the party on the first floor. It's believed that individual is in the basement.
When the first group entered, a security system was activated. Two gems set in the walls were blasting them with various kinds of elemental rays, but the floor rose to try to protect them. They managed to deactivate the system by reaching a control panel, pressing their hand to it, and thinking about the system shutting off.
The first group, who explored the first floor, encountered some animated candlesticks, chairs and cutlery that fled as it was being attacked. The character Gronk befriended a chair and was granted it at the bequest of the Master. They also found some Mephits in the kitchen that were apparently making the food. Across the hall were some Dryads in a peaceful in-home garden type of setting who were helping to tend to a pool that can restore strength and vitality in a limited fashion. However, there were also some shadows and skeletal champions to contend with.
The second group tackled the second floor. They found a partially insubstantial man in one very large room, and he challenged them by setting elementals upon them. Some wondered as to the necessity of attacking them to learn about them, but he explained that darkness had befallen his house and he considered that combat was a good way to measure exactly what someone would or would not do; if the characters had resorted to using more evil to win, or displayed such characteristics, he wouldn't have told them what they needed to know.
The house, it seems, was phase-shifted for many years, though its residents didn't know it. The reason was never given, but the house has recently reappeared and its guests even more recently, potentially due to the presence of the "infection" as the Master calls it. The house served the purpose as a wayward home for denizens of various planes, and the home's disposition (undoubtedly good) swayed some of the typically more capricious residents toward being more good.
The party also encountered some traps set up by the Imposter (the person who snatched the Master's body) on the second floor, including some Jelly's in the bathroom (one shot out of a toilet for the love of the Gods), a Mimic in the Master's bedroom (which was handily killed via slumber hex and coup de grace) and some invisible fungus in the storeroom which also contained an assortment of treasure.
Having cleared out the second floor, the party went back to Lord Remmont, who was waiting on the first floor, to report and inform him that one of the animated chairs was to be given to someone who'd helped with the first floor's clearing. Lord Remmont was reasonably upset at the loss of one of his possessions until he went to argue with the Master about it, at which point he shut the hell up and accepted it.
The last task for the group is to get rid of that bastard Imposter in the basement and free the home from its struggle. Once they do so the Master can finally be free of his half-living state and die in peace. Lord Remmont is willing to offer some money for the effort.
