Summary
A short, mysterious figure had just been sighted in Greyhaven carrying off a deadly artifact known as the Enemy of all Enemies. Mordred tracked the figure's string of victims first to a residential home in the lower-class section of the Commerce District. The man's body was there, and Mordred was able to convince it to tell him about the figure, who turned out to be a halfling, along with a taller man. This taller figure was subsequently dead upstairs in a room where the first victim had stored an energy harnessing device. The first victim had suspected that the device was stolen to act as an explosive of some sort. It was kept here, in secret, where the inventor had hoped to conduct more experiments in private.
The trail led to the tall guy's house next. Mordred temporarily reanimated a dead woman in the house. She informed him that her husband had come home a few days ago acting strangely, but before she could ask more he called her an enemy of the clan and attacked her, killing her and the rest of the family. She remembers a child-like being there, but she was far more focused on her murderous husband. As it goes, the family had a side business in dealing with drugs and smuggling in the lower tunnels. She suspected, but could not be certain, that her husband was down there earlier in the day.
Mordred, fearing that an explosion could level the Commerce District, ordered an evacuation. He then went into the tunnels under the District to attempt to find the man responsible. He was delayed by a small group of cult-followers who turned out to be a distraction, but he was able to learn the location of his target after only a few minutes. The man he attempted to take into custody, however, dispatched of its guards and fled.
Mordred eventually found a chamber with necromantic runes scrawled across the floor, the sword hovering in midair over the energy collection device. The child, who was indeed a halfling, was using necromancy to hasten the collection process. Mordred proceeded to cut his arms off just below the elbow, an action the necromancer had been counting on. His blood fueled the spell he had laid, and it was only quick thinking and a stone shaping spell that stopped that. The necromancer tried to stop Mordred by summoning chains of darkness, but they were no match. Mordred attempted to apprehend the man, but he dissolved into a blood elemental and flowed into his working, manifesting as a pair of malevolent eyes above the sword. It taunted Mordred with the reality that it had already succeeded, but it didn't realize a fatal flaw in its own plan; Mordred would actually sacrifice his power for his kingdom.
With an anguished cry it began to scream as Mordred grasped the channeling orb, funneling his own power and experience into it to stop the working. He felt his most potent spells and the knowledge of how to cast them leech from his mind, but it just wasn't enough. With a final realization, he grasped the sword by the hilt and drove it down into the orb, shattering the crystal and creating a rift that consumed both objects. Confused and delirious, Mordred nevertheless managed to cast a teleportation spell just before the two annihilated each other, bathing the cavern in intense heat but otherwise not causing any damage.
Mordred awoke several days later in his bed back in the castle. He spoke briefly with his wife before Varian arrived in the guise of an even older man. He had heard about the evacuation and subsequent return of the citizens once it was clear that the threat had been contained. Together they went back into the tunnels, found the hidden secret room where the cultists had gathered, and enjoyed their slow torture. Varian even turned the man who had previously delayed Mordred into a rat in a cage, the better to serve it.
